THE SUPERINTENDENCY.
The polling for the Superintendence took place throughout the Province today, and in every corner pf it, so far as could be learned up to"the time ol' our writing, excited the greatest interest. As far as Dunedin and Invercargill are concerned, the excitement has been intense; In town, from the opening of the poll until its close, there has been more bustle than we have seen displayed on any similar occasion before; The respective committee rooms were, of course, the scene of excitement, but in and around Mr Macandrcw’s room was observable the greatest excitement; There telegrams and election squibs were freely published, and some of the cartoons displayed caused much merriment. In the course of the day we issued the following as an extra. ; “ A telegraphic message has been received in town on reliable authority, to the effect that there is no truth whatever in the report that the San Francisco Mail Contract has been repudiated;”
We have deemed it inadvisable to delay the paper, in order to obtain the results of the polling in town, which could not be ascertained at a reasonable hour. We shall, however, issue
extras hourly during the evening, with the results of the polling in those districts where the telegraph is available.
