The Cromwell Company are still crushing. During last week thay had a clearing up. For nine days ciushing from the Golden Link the result was 420 ounces.

SPECIAL FROM ALEXANDRA.
Auckland, February 10. Whitiora’s meeting has broken up. Ho is now with thirty armed Natives in a whare at Ruekau, five miles from Alexandra. He visited Tapihana on his way. Tapihana was defiant, and danced the war dance. Whitiora’s companion from Orhia says that Tapihaua’s movements must be stopped, Barton and party have returned. Whitiora said he would never be taken alive, nor would Todd’s murderers. Ho did not, however, agree with Tapihana’s work, and had ordered him to Kawihawa. Tapihana hud consented to return. When the Europeans heard of his return to Kawihawa,, the alarm which had prevailed subsided; till then they had been on guard, and had left forty men at Pukana. Hokitika, February 11. The mail steamer Rangoon sailed on Tuesday last, taking 97,000 ounces of gold and IS,OOO sovereigns. Judge Smyth, while travelling to Beechworth, received a sunstroke. He insisted on opening the court the following day. His brain was evidently affected. In the afternoon he became violent, and was removed to the lunatic
asylum. Tim Whither has gone to Launceston, and is looking splendid. There was very little betting on. There was a great rush to the Insolvent Court on the 31st ult. Eighty schedules were registered on that day. The new Act came in force on the Ist of February. 'Dae Omeo arrived on the night of the 2nd. The report of the Australasian Fire Insurance Company is more encouraging, shewing the profits on the half year to be L 4200. Commercial. Business remains quiet, the onl3 r excitement noticeable being in sugars. Breadstuff's are a little easier this week. Sales of Adelaide flour, country brands, are made at LII 5s to Lli 10s, and Adelaide wheat at 0s Id to 0s sel. Five hundred bags of New Zealand wheat were sold yesterday on private terms. Four hundred bags of New Zealand oats were sold yesterday at 3s lid, and three hundred hags of ordinary quality at 3s lid. Four cargoes of sugar sold this week in hues at very full prices. The market is very firm. Kerosene is again quiet; Downer’s sells at 2s 6d Oriental at 2s 4id. Sydney. Martin has been committed for trial for the murder of his wife and her father and mother. The Hero arrived on the morning of the 29th, after a passage from Auckland of four days and eighteen hours. Stocks of wheat are almost exhausted. There is good enquiry at current rates. Wool is brisker, and [trices have slightly improved. Adelaide. Wheat sales are made at Is 9d; country flour at Lll 10s. The Government have received applications for the reward for the coal discovery near Hog Bay, Kangaroo Island. Thames via Tauranga, F. b uary 10. The man Edward Sullivan, hurt by the fall of a tree at Tapu, is dead. A ton of stone from the Caledonian mine realised 3500 ounces of gold. Another dividend is declared.
