Mr Macandrew addressed tho electors here at Gilligan’s Hotel last evening. There were nearly 4-00 persons present, and he was enthusiastically received.
Christchurch, February 9. D unford’s accommodation house on
the Rakaia was totally destroyed by fire last night. The building was insured in the New Zealand Company for LloO, and London and Lancashire, L3OO ; and stock and furniture in the New Zealand for Loot). The cause of the fire is not yet to hand.
Auckland via Tauranga, February 7. The Wonga Wonga arrived last
night, ami .sailed at 2.30 p.m. to-day, with sixty-five passengers. From Alexandra to-day, the Thames Advertiser learns that the Hauhaus’ prophet says the Natives who shot Mr Todd ought to have cub off and taken away his head as an offering to their god, which might have prevented other Europeans being murdered. Mr Crewe, who returned the fire of the Natives when chased out of Pirongia, wounded one of them. The Natives, however, have been keeping it very dark. Commercial.—The grain market is firm at former quotations. Flour, LI 3, but sales are confined to trade requirements ; inferior qualities, L 9 to LI2. Auckland via Thames, February 7. Mr and Mrs Charles Matthews’s morning performance to-day was successful. They sailed to-day in the Wonga Wonga for Honolulu. Tke Wonga Wonga. took (15 passengers, Mr and Mrs Matthews included. The Luna sails to-day for Wellington with 35 armed constabulary. Mr Commissioner Branigan is affected with lunacy, and was lodged in the Asylum to-day. Sydney, January 31. The Australian Steam Navigation Company has declared a dividend of 10 per cent. A vote of want of confidence in the Martin Ministry is notified. Subscriptions are being raised for a marriage present to the Princess Louisa. The Inter-Colonial Wool Exhibition was a great success. Sailed—Cylene, for Lyttleton.
