FUNERAL OF THE LATE REV. DR BURNS.
The mortal remains of the late Rev. Thomas Burns, D.D., were committed to their final resting place this afternoon, in the presence of one of the largest assemblages of the citizens ever held for such as id purpose. It was announced that the funeral would leave the deceased gentleman’s late residence in Loudon street at one o’clock, but Divine Service having been held there, it was not until half-past two o’clock that it left. The route was along London street, down Albert street and Stuart street, as far as the Octagon, and then along Princes street to the Cemetery. The hearse, before reaching the Octagon, was followed by the members of the First Church and the deceased’s intimate friends, and by the Mayor and Corporation; and on reaching the Octagon, the Friendly Societies and other public bodies joined in. The appeal of the Mayor, that the citizens should close their places of business, was generally responded to, and Hags were displayed at half-mast on most of the principal places of business along the hue of route. As the procession passed through the Cutting, the bell at the Post Office was tolled, as was that of the First Church at intervals. The stree.ts along which the cortege passed were closely lined with people. The funeral itself, we should say, was attended by nearly 1200 persons, and its length may be judged from the fact that when the head of- it reached the Southern Recreation Ground the last row of horsemen were parsing the Dully Tunes office.
The following was the order of the pro cession :
Hearse.. Relatives. (The Rev. W. Bannerman and Mr A. R. Livingston chief mourners.) Session Deacons Court, and former Office-
bearers. Ministers of Religion. Congregation of First Church. University Council. Office-bearers of other Churches. Mayor and Corporation of Dunedin. Officials of General and Provincial Gov.ru-
ments. Schoolmasters,
The various Friendly Societies of Otago, General Public, Vehicles and Horsemen.
