Auckland via Thames, January 24, A fire broke out on board the clipper ship City of Auckland, at one o’clock this morning. Charles Hudson, the ship’s parpenter, was awoke by a creaking noise, and discovered fire in the fore-hold. He at once gave the alarm, and the Fire Brigade, assisted by the police and the crews at the pumps of the different vessels, went immediately to work, The ship was removed into the harbor, but all efforts to extinguish the flames proving unavailing; she was scuttled in four fathonis of water. The fire is now extinguished (3.15 p.m.) The yeasel lies in water up to the deck, and is considerably injured forward by fire, besides'having scuttle Iwles all
round. The fire originated amongst, some tow, 300 bales of which were shipped the previous day. The remainder of the cargo consisted of wool, flax, gum, oil, and tallow. The ship was nearly full, and was to sail in February with forty passengers, and she cost L 20,000, The captain does not believe that the fire arose from spontaneous combustion ; the general impression is that it was the work of an incendiary. Messrs Brown, Campbell, and Co., Henderson, Macfarlanc, and .Co., Cruickshank, Smart, and Co., Must and Co., and Walker, are the •principal losers. Most of the cargo was insured, but the vessel was uninsured.
