The Athen.eum. —We have received a st dement of the assets and liabilities of tbe Dunedin Atliemeum to M Ist December, IS7O, from which it appears that the liabilities amount to LI, 133 !'s (id, and the assets to LG,589 Is 2d.
Appointment. —Wo hear that Capt. Kennedy, of the Airedale, has reo ived the appointment of coastal pilot to the boats of tbe new San Francisco line, at a salary of L(J00 a year. Whatever may be said about this appointment in other respects, no better man could be procured to till it. To Correspondents. — We have received Mr Stout’s professed reply to “ Fleeter.” To oblige Mr Stout it shall appear to-morrow, though we cannot see that, if true, it alters the inconsistency of condemn - ing Mr Macandrew for a coarse that G approved of in Mr Reid.
Scholastic. Miss Gertrude Calcutt has been appointed to the office of schoolmistress of South Dunedin School. Miss Calcutt’s certificates were first-class, and she has been teaching with considerable success during the last year at the Mornington School.
The Elections. —Mr 'Bradshaw received "a requisiti m yesterday to stand for the Mataura district in the Provincial Council, but declined because be has a'ready consented to stand for “Mount Bongay’ 'Hie Mount Beugor electorate ior the Council is nearly the same in respect to boundaries as that of the Wa’kaia in the Asscmb'y. Mr Bradshaw has consented to stand for Wiakia in the Assembly and the Benger for the Council.
Death of Dh Waters. —The Jersey Independent of October 29 gives an account of the sudden death of Dr John Jones Waters, who practised medicine some time in this city. From the evidence it appeared that the deeased fell down, while walking along Trinity Road, Island of Jersey, an I died inline liat dy. The cause of death was dGai-e of the heart. His memory will be eli. ; wi'had by the many friends Iu; had mule iu Dunedin.
Infanticide, —The (lirouer’s inquiry upon the body of the child louud near the Old Cemetery last week, which was adjourned fro n Monday, was concluded yesterday. The medical evidence went to show that death had resulted from exposure, ami from pressure upon the ho ly causing blood to flow from the month and nose. It was stated that from appearances the child was full-grown and healthy, and had been carried to the spot. A verdict of “ wilful- murder against some person or persons unknown” was returned. The Coroner took occasion to congratulate the jury on the rarity of infanticide in this place, only five cases of the sort having come under his notice during the last eight years, and spoke in terms of the highest praise of the humane conduct of Mrs Bills, by whom the child was taken in charge after its discovery.
The quarterly meeting of the Otago Schoolmasters’ Association will hr held in the Education Cilice, to-morrow, at one o’clock.
Mr Macanukew will address the electors of the North-Fast \ alloy at the Drill Shed, Water of Leith, to-morrow (Saturday) aftcnioui, at four o’clock He will be at Port Chalmers, and starts for his up-country tour in the evening. Therefore, howevt r inconvenii nt that hour is, it was a matter of necessity.
