THE CITY ELECTION.
The polling for two members to represent the City in tbe General Assembly took place to-day, anil excited a great deal of interest. Vote by ballot has had the effect of doing away with all the noise and bustle so observable at the tolling booth's when the old state of thing? was in existence, and to-day s pioCvedings produced an exhibition ot g 0( order and go d feeling on ad sides which is hu'hiy commendable. Of coiiise there was the usual amount of touting, betting, and display of placards on cabs usual on similar occasions. At six o’clock, the Keturnmg odicer (Mr Burnside) declared the state ot the poll to be as follows: Dunedin, Total Bathgate ... CU §3 JjJJ Eeynokls ... 604 Macassey ... 474 M Graham ... r, 7 ' ”7 Grant ••• 45 o - £ He declared Messrs Bathgate anil Keynolds duly elected. All tbe candidatt s brietty returned thanks. There were about 800 or 1000 persons present.
