The numbers polled were—Wakefield, IG9; Duncan, 151. The result created general surprise, Napier, January 10. The Hon. Donald M‘Lcan was reelected to-day, as representative for Napier in the Assembly, without opposition. TUAPEKA RACES. Lawrence, January 19. MAIDEN PLATE. Prince’s Backbiter ... 1 Pritchard’s Pore top ... 2 Williams’s Duchess ... 3 Won easy by two lengths, with hands down. Time, 3 minutes 42 seconds. Invercargill, January 19. The nominations for a member of the Assembly for the town took place to-day. Messrs H. Calder, Lumsden, and M‘Clure were proposed. Mr M‘Clurc withdrew, stating that his views were substantially the same as those held by Mr Lumsden, Mr Calder reiterated his former cxr pressious of opinion.

Mr Lumsclen said he was in favor of the Government scheme as propounded.

The show of hands was—For Calder, 24 ; for Lumsden, 14. A poll was demanded, and fixed for Tuesday. A close contest is expected. Mr Deniston, candidate for the Mataura, addressed a meeting last night. He is opposed to the Government scheme. A motion in his favor was carried, in opposition to an amendment to the effect that the meeting ought not to express any opinion till Mr Dillon Bell was heard. Considerable interest is being taken in election matters.
