THE MOUNT IDA RACES.

{Abridged from the Mount Ida Chronicle.) These races took place on Wednesday and Thursday last. The attendance, on the whole, was not so large as that on previous gatherings, attributable, no doubt, to the fact of the near appraach of the Christmas holidays. The following are the results : FIRST DAT. Maiden Plate of 40 sovs., for all horses that never won an advertized prize of over L 25. Distance, one and a-half mile. ■ Six entries. Pretender ... ... j Sir Tatton ... ... 2 Hamilton 3

Grand Stand Handicap of 100 sovs. Distance, two miles. Six entries—Prince’s Backbiter, Morten’s Southern Chief, Pritchard’s Foretop, Ray’s Misfortune, Keenan’s Game Cock, and Laverty’s Zoe.

Game Cock and Backbiter looked well, and seemed as though they would be the winning horses, and Misfortune as though she meant to keep up her reputation. Southern Chief, however, was the favorite, and showed well, although his movement was a little slow'. On the fall of the flag Southern Chief was the first on his legs, and led the way, followed closely by Game Cock, who joined issue with the Chief half-way round. Misfortune now began to move to the front, and took a leading place on the second round. The Chief, warming to his work, soon made his appearance in the front again, and came in an easy winner ; Misfortune a good second place. The performances of Game Cock disappoints many, as for some time he maintained a front place till he bolted. The Chief's excellent condition won this race. This event was an exciting one, from the well-known character of the horses entered. Southern Chief 1 Misfortune 2 Backbiter 3

Town Plate of 50 sovs. Distance, one and ■ a-half miles.

There were only two entries, Backbiter being scratched. At the start Atlas took a good lead. Duchess being about 10 yards behind. On passing the stand, Atlas showed three lengths ahead of his antagonist. In this order they ran for some time, when on approaching the straight running he pushed ahead and came in winner easily by a couple of lengths.

Free Handicap of 50 sovs. Distance, quarter miles. Six entries. Prince’s Lyndon, Prince’s Monk, Keenan’sTopsy, Forster’s Charley, Stanton’s Little Nell, and Ray’s Stackpool. This was a good race throughout. A tablecloth might have covered all the horses when half the distance had been run, and they ran close together till near the finish, Stackpool winning by half a length, with Little Nell second. The selling race of 20 sovs., was won by Pritchard’s Fireater, Eegnum being second.

SECOND DAT. Hurdle Race ,of 40 sovs. Distance, one mile heats, over four flights of hurdles. Five entries —Forster’s Charley, Ray's Stackpool, Pritchard’s Don Wccden’s Nigger, and Prince’s Sir Tatton. , Won by Don Pedro, Charley coming in j a good second. j Mount Ida Handicap of 75 sovs. Dirtance, two and a-half miles. Fourcn-/ tries —Morten’s Atlas, Ray’s Misfortune • Grant’s Pretender, and Keenan’s Game Cock. Backbiter was scratched for this race. Pretender and Atlas were freely mentioned as the winning horses. Game Cock had the start, but Pretender soon overhauled and passed him. On passing the Grand Stand Atlas was a close second, and Misfortune occupied a good third position, with Game Cock a number of lengths in the rear. On the second round the same order was kept, till the Cock gave in. Atlas now pushed ahead within half a mile of the winning post, and ran with the Pretender for some time, whom he soon headed. Misfortune, who, i was running third place, came up and joined A Pretender, and at the straight took his place, Atlas came in an easy winner by three A lengths, Misfortune second, and Pretender a good third. Selling Eace of 30 sovs. Won by Lyndon - , . Colleen Bawn being second. ■* Mount Ida Cup of 75 sovs. Weight for age. Second horse to save his stakes. Distance, two miles. Three entries— Morten’s Southern Chief, Prince’s Back'! biter, Pritchard’s Foretop. i Misfortune and Duchess were both scratched. The Southern Chief was the fa- i voritc. At the start Backbiter took the m front, but soon had to give place to the Chief M and Foretop. Halfway rbund the Chief was leading by a couple of lengths, and on passing the grand stand. Backbiter improved his position to within one length from the Chief, Foretop losing ground fast. This / order was kept up for about three-quarters | of a mile, when the Chief gained on the black horse, and landed the Cup by five, lengths; Foretop a bad third.
