MAYOR’S COURT.

This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor, and W. H. Reynolds, Esq., j.P.) DRUNKENNESS. Benjamin Farra was fined 40s or seven days ; Elizabeth Farra 10s or 48 hours ; and Samuel Farra, Simon Stephenson, and Jas. Hayes, 40s each or 14 days. A charge of drunkenness and using profane language, preferred against Mary Thomson alias Brown, was dismissed, the Bench taking compassion on her children, one of whom was scarcely six months old, OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Elizabeth Farra, for this offence, was fined 40s, with the alternative of 14 days’ imprisonment. NEGLECTED CHILD. The eldest of the children of Mary Thomson, aged about three years, was charged with being a neglected child; but as the mother promised to lead a better life and take greater care of her children for the future, the case was withdrawn. RREACH OF THE LICENSING ORDINANCE. George Dodson pleaded guilty to a charge of allowing billiards to be played in his licensed house, the Empire Hotel, after proper hours. Shortly before two o’clock on the morning of the 15th instant, Sergeant Ryan, accompanied by Constable Baxter, went to the Empire aud found several parties playing billiards. Although told to desist, the game was continued. They obtained admission from the barman, Mr Dodson heipg in the country. The defendant was timed 40s and costs.

INFORMATIONS UNDER THE EVE-LAWS. William Jcsscp was charged with having an unregistered dog. The case was adjourned until to-morrow, to enable him to decide whether he would destroy the clog, which he said did not belong to him, or get it registered. A charge of a similar nature, preferred against William Breading, was dismissed with a caution, the dog having been registered since the service of the summons. It was intimated that the Bench intended to take a stand, in this matter. Up to the present had endeavored to let off as much as possible persons summoned for this offence ; but they wished it to be understood that they would not admit of any more excuses. Several warnings had already been made without effect, and for the future the fine would be inflicted where registration had not taken place before the service of the summons after warning. H. L. Lazarus was charged with obstructing the footpath in Princes street, by watering it with a hose. The Commissioner of Police said the case had been brought for the purpose of obtaining an expression of opinion as to whether shopowners could water the footpath to the annoyance of foot passengers. The Bench dismissed the case, observing that shop-owners should be more cautious in using these hoses. A chare of a similar nature preferred against Alex. Beaver was also dismissed. Tong Hup was mulcted in costs for neglecting to keep his premises clean ; and Robert -Jackson was fined 20s for allowing cattle to wander. George Drydcn was charged by the Market Inspector with exposing goods for sale in Fleet street. The defendant proved that ho had been merely delivering goods ordered from him ; and the case was therefore dismissed.
