A PROTEST.

To the Mitor of the Evening Star. “The creature’s at his dirty work again.” Hudibras. Sir,—l am glad to find you have done justice to his Worship the Mayor in re Mr Yogel’a meeting at the Masonic Hall, en Tuesday evening last. Your contemporary, the Daily Times, in Wednesday’s issue, reporting said meeting with his usual inconsistency, states that after the Mayor had read the advertisement calling the meeting, he (ihe Mayor) took tho chair, thereby leading those who were not present, to infer, that his Worship had no right to take the chair. That, sir, is a base falsehood, and like + he rest of the report, clearly shews the “cloven hoof, ’ the father of misleading. The simple facts are, that as soon as his Worship called upon the meeting to elect a chairman, fearing some simpleton who had

just come from listening to a certain political mountebank and mUleader of tlie laboring classes, might propose his leader take the chair or some other foolish action, I proposed that his Worship the Mayor do take the chair, stating as a reason that I considered it a duty we owe to the Mayor and to ourselves, as citizens, to elect our chi f magistrate to preside over us. This proposition was seconded and received by the audience with a perfect outburst of enthusiasm. Sir, by publishing this letter, you will greatly oblige, as although we may differ from a gentleman’s political views, the truth should at all times be spoken of him, and I must say on this occasion the Mayor acted most impartially. I am, &c., Protestant.
