PORT CHALMERS CORPORATION.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —In your issue of the 9th, I observe that Mr Taylor has attain rushed into print. I refer him to the ollicial reply, which I herewith enclose, I regret, for Mr Tayier’s own sake, that ho has felt it to lie his duty to again bring his faults before tho public so prominently. He really seems angry at me. I am astonished at this, as but a few months ago, in the exuberance of his j >y at my having been elected Mayor of this town, he fired his guns and otherwise gave the warmest expressions of his satisfaction. As he was my only opponent in the contest, this seemed very kind and disinterested. 1 know he loves me yet, warmly and dearly ; and those who put down these late effusions of his to spleen or disappointment are sadly mistaken, and don’t know the genial nature of the good old man. Yours, &c., H. M‘Derm in, Port Chalmers, December 12. [Enclosure.] “ In compliance with a resolution passed by the Port Chalmers Town Council, at their meeting held on the 7th December, we have gone over the books, letters, and other documentary evidence, and have come to the following conclusion, viz. : —That in 1807 we received a subsidy of L 097 on rates levied for ISGG (being subsidy of L2 to LI under the Otago Municipal Corporations Ordinance Amendment rdmance, 18GG). That in ISG7 there were no rates and no subsidy. That ia January, 18G9, wc received the sum of L 95 10s 3d, as subsidy on rates levied iu ISGB at ten shilling ro the :L‘, under tho resolution of the Provincial Council iu ISGB (vide Votes and Proceedings, Session XXIV, page I'll)) ; and in August, ISG9, we received LlO3 2s 9d, as subsidy for rates levied in ISG9, under the same arrangement. That no other suhsi iy has been received ; and that .Mr Tayier’s statement is not consistent with the facts of tho case. “ H. M‘Dermjd, Mayor. “ Gkouge L. Asher, Town Clerk. “ Port Chalmers, , “ December 12, 1870.”
