PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL— A MARE’S NEST.

To the Editor of the Emilng Star.

Sje—ln your yesterday’s publication you give a report of the meeting of the Port Chalmers Town Council. Among other matters to which Mr M‘Demid referred as to what he had done in the Provincial Council (he did not say what ho had neglected to do), ho mentioned a foolish notice of motion of his, viz—That an address bo presented to his Honor to place a sum on the estimates to make up a difference which he contends is still due on the subsidy to the rates, but was opposed by me, for what object lie could not tell, but left it to me to explain. In my opinion be is like the monkey who got hold of a hot potato and did not kpow what to do with it, and he now wants me to handle it for him. If he has not sense enough to see the truth, it is for him to give his version of the matter and not me. When his motion came on for discussion in the Provincial Council, I stated the whole facts to file House, leaving Mr M‘Demid, in his reply, to contradict my statement. This he did not do ; neither did lie say one word in defence of his motion, as be was in duty bound todiavc done, if he had any reason to doubt the facta as stated by me. I declared then, and I still hold to it, that the municipality has received all the subsidy due to it. Mr M‘Demid says he has examined the books of the Council 1 also have done the same, as well as the Treasury accounts and the vouchers upon' which the subsidy has been paid. He has done the same also, and yet he cannot be convinced. It is not my intention to keep up a newspaper correspondence with Air M‘Demid or the Town Council. I can employ my time

more profitably ; therefore I shall not reply to any letters either he or they may satid to the press, as it is a matter which only concerns the inhabitants of the Port and which can bn settled there.

py inserting the above fn your paper of this evening you will oblige. Yours, &c., Tiiom.vs T.vvler. Port Chalmers, Dec. 9.
