Letter Writing Extraordinary. —The Post Offi e authorities in this Province have been much tr.mbi.-d witai a single letter. Says the Mount. Ida Chronicle “ Mahomet Khan, formerly living at the Kyoburn, and well known among residents both on the Hogburn and the Kyoburn diggings, writing from Inglewood, Victoria, to a friend on the Kyeburn, thus addresses his letter;—‘Mr Hennery Menet or to mr David parches or to mr morgan, post ofiiee, b:g guiban, tigo, New'scaland.’ This address seems to have puzzled more than one postmaster, for the letter bears the following memoradum :—‘Not known in Otago Province,’ ‘not known in Canterbury,’ ‘not Nelson,’ ‘try North,’ ‘ not Auckland,’ ‘try Big Kyeburn,’the last ingenious reading at once solving the mystery, and causing the letter to reach it proper destination, much wc should imagine to the surprise of the recipients.” The letter itself is a gem, an 1 the orthography, if anything, is worse than the address.

Pout Chalmers. A number of persona favorable to the formation of a second company of Volunteers at Port Chalmers, held a inciting at Denchc’s Hotel last evening. Captain Thompson was in the The Chairman explained that the object of the meeting was to have a second Company to be filled up with seamen only, and the regulation was that there should be at least 36 persons in that company, 30 privates, and six officers. He (Captain Thompson) would assist them as far as he could, and when the company was formed, he would retire and give place to to those they might choose for their commanding officers. He then read a document it was necessary they should sign, and a few of the regulations they mu t submit to if allowed to become a company, and called on the promoters to bring forward any resolution they wished to propose. Mr H. Turner in a short speech proposed the name to be the Port Chalmers Marine Artillery corps. The resolution was carried, and Mr H. Dench thought it would be best to adjourn the meeting for a week to give the supporters of the movement time to know what they were doing. A resolution to that effect was carried, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting. A meeting of the Otago Jockey Club will be held at the Kmpbo Hotel this evening at eight o’clock, when all parties interested are invited to attend. We have been requested to call the attention of the cadets of the High and District Schools to a general order which appears in our advertising columns. The Secretary of the Otago Rifle Association announces by advertisement that he will attend at Wain’s Hotel on Wednesday and Saturday evenings next, from 8 to 9 o’clock, to receive subscriptions, Mr Rkodie will deliver a lecture on “The Spectator’s Comments upon the Manners and Customs of England 150 years ago,” on Wednesday evening, in the class room beneath Ike Wesleyan Church.
