Gift Auction Sale. —’The auction sale in aid of the funds of St. Paul’s Church last night was crowded during the whole of the time it lasted, fully four hours. Messrs F. H. Evans and Barnett were kept as hnsily employed as they could be in disposing of the numerous articles sent in, and as untiring as their efforts were they only succeeded in clearing off about half of them. We believe that the amount of last night’s takings was close upon LBO. The sale was resumed this afternoon, and will be continued this evening-
Concert. —We would remind our realcrs that the vocal and instrumental eoncert under the auspices of the North Dunedin Mutual Improvement Society, comes off at the North Dunedin drill shed this evening. A capital programme has been arranged, and we anticipate a largo attendance. Princess Theatre. The performances at the theatre last evening deserved to have been witnessed by a larger audience. The good house of the previous evening, and the counter attractions last night mi itated against the possibility of there being a very large attendance ; yet we did not anticipate that it would he so meagre as it was. The piece ife rcsinlance was Craven’s two-act drama, “The Chimney Corner,” which must be fresh in the recollection of our readers as having been a piece which on its first production here enjoyed such a good run, and in which an actor now in England made such a decided hit. flood as was its representation then, wc do not Imitate to say it was even better played last evening. Th ■ part of Grandfather Probity, in Mr Mnsgrave’s hands, was a piece of re dly linishol acting ; and Mr Lawrence really surprised us by lbs careful rendering of the part of John Probity. Miss George bad not much to do, but it is almost unnecessary to say that what she did was done well; and Mrs Brycr was an excellent Probity nurre. The afterpiece was “Cwynneth Vaughan.” To-night, “Naval Engagements” will be produced, to be followed by “The Chinnier Corner.’' Rifle Match. — A rifle match between the officers and gunners of the Dunedin Volunteer Artillery will be fired tomorrow morning, at the Pelichet Bay range. This match has for some time been looked forward to with great interest by the corps, and, as both sides feel confident of being victorious, a close and exciting match may be anticipated. Among those who arc to fire in this match several young and promising shots are to make their first appearance, and we trust their scores will be such as will justify their names being added to the list of the crack shots of the corps. The following are the respective sides : Capt. M ‘Far I ami Gunner Turtou Lieut. Jack ~ Reid Sergt.-Major Fildcs ~ Blyth Sergt. Muir ~ Bcdborongh ~ Smith ~ Henderson ~ Morris ~ Pell Corporal Ogilvie ~ Fulton ~ Greenfield ~ Lambert Wc understand that, by the mail just arrived, the scores of the Perthshire Company were received, the result being in favor of the Dunedin Volunteer Artillery by 88 points.
Deputation. —This morning, a depu-tation-consisting of Majors Bathgate and Atkinson, representing the Volunteers ; Mr S. James, as the representative of the Forbury Park Company ; and Mr J. Begg, representing the settlers in the Kensington and St. Kilda districts—had an interview with his Honor the Superintendent.—Major Bathgate explained the object of the deputation, which was to lay before his Honor their views regarding the expenditure of the sum of LIOO voted at the last session of the Provincial Council for the erection of Hoodgates on the Anderson’s Bay road. It was represented that the present llood-gatcs were not so convenient as they might be, and they were not at all attended to. It was thought that by the throwing across of two sluiceboxes at stated parts of the road, and the deepening and straightening of the sludgechannel, the overflow of back water on to the riile range at Anderson’s Bay would he prevented, and the suggested alterations would have the effect of improving the drainage of all the property on the flat. It was further stated that by the employment of prison labor the work would not cost more than Lof), and it would render the erection of llood-gatcs unnecessary.—His Honor suggested that as the work asked to be done would have the effect of improving private property, the owners of property affected might he induced to give some assistance ; but Mr Begg did not seem to think they would, and it was stated that assistance from the local Road Board could not ho looked for.—His Honor promised to bring the matter before the Executive, stating that if an assurance could he got from the owners of propex-ty that they would assist, there was no doubt that would ensure the work being done.—Before the deputation withdrew, several matters connected with the Volunteers were brought under his Honor’s notice.—Major Bathgate explained that a very large amount was expended annually in removing powder used by the Volunteers from the present depot. Mr Begg, on whoso property the riile range was, was willing to allow the erection of a magazine, and the General Government had promised to give lAO towards the cost of its construction, which would he about In about two years that amount, now expended on boat hire, would be saved ; and the Volunteers had to ask the sanction of the Government to the proposal. His Honor thought arrangements could bo made by which the Volunteers could have control of a portion of a magazine in the Anderson’s Bay road, with which assurance the deputation appeared to be satisfied. His Honor also promised to give the use of rooms in the new Rost Cilice building for an armory and Adjutant’s office, and to lay before the Executive the necessity for clerical assistance being given to the Adjutant. The competition of the Dunedin Volunteer Artillery, for places in the repre-
resentative firing, will take place at the Anderson’s Bay range on the mornings of tho loth, 22nd, and 29th inst., at half-past five sharp.
The firing of No. 1 Company, for selection of men to compete for representatives, takes place at Anderson’s Bay on Saturday, the 12th, Wednesday, Kith, and Saturday, tho 19th instant., at 5 a.m.
