Wellington', November 8. ■ The Government received a telegram yesterday from Dir Roclifovt, railway surveyor, that on all the new route to Wairarapa discovered by him the gradients will nowhere exceed one in forty, and he hopes to have the whole line cut down and ready for inspection on S iturday. [The following telegram was received last evening, but too late for publication in our Second Edition.] Christchurch, November 7. The Races were well attended. The following are the results ; MAIDEN PLATE. Envy ... ... ... 1 Songstress ... ... 2 Vernon ... ... ... 3 LOTTERY PLATE. Miss Elat ... ... 1 Atlas ... ... ... 2 Thornie ... ... ... 3 THE CUP. Peeress ... ... ... 1 Knottingly ... ... 2 Mariner ... ... ... 3 Only three horses ran, FREE HANDICAP. Lacenfeed ... ... 1 Backbiter ... ... 2 November 8. The weather was very wet this morning. The Jockey Club met at 10 o’clock, although the first race for today was not to commence before one. The Club postponed the races until the 10th and 11th. The weather got fine in less than an hour afterwards, but the Club would not consent to go on. The action of the Club is strongly and generally condemned. The cattle show to-morrow promises to bo successful.
