Postal. —We understand that on and after Ist prox. the commission charged ou money orders drawn on the United Kingdom will be double the present rates. Supreme Court. —The trial of the case Anderson v. Burke was continued today, his Honor’s summing up occupying four hours. The jury retired at three o’clock, but had not agreed to a verdict at half-past four o’clock. The Clyde Gold Robbery. —Au enquiry of considerable length was made by the police at Arrow town on Tuesday last, before Mr Lisp ctor Percy, in re the Clyde robbery reward. The various applicants were present. The evidence has been forwarded to the Executive. Martin’s Bay.-—Some four or five persons from Martin’s Bay passed through Queenstown on Friday, on their way to Dunedin. They speak well of the prospects of the settlement but state that the road between the head of the lake and Lake Kakapo is difficult to travel over in the saddle owing to the snow. The settlers are dependent upon Hokitika and Croymonth for supplies, and for which very high prims are charged by the coasting steamers. Princess Theatre.—Tire comedy of “Playing with Fire” and “The Married Rake ” were repeated last night to a very fair house. To-night, “Jocrisse, the Juggler” will be repeated, and on Thursday, at the request of a number of playgoers, the management have consented to produce “Caste” and “Frou-Frou.” Wc would strongly advise those who like to sec firstclass modern plays well acted and tastefully put on the stage not to neglect this opportunity of doing so, for it may be a long time ere another is afforded them. City Council. —At this afternoon’s sitting there were present—the Mayor, Councillors Barnes, Cargill, Jack, and Walter. Amongst the correspondence read was a letter from the keeper of the Manure Depot who denied that he was guilty of the charges of neglect preferred against him. The letter was simply received, Mr Barnes intimating that he intended bringing up a scheme in reference to the Depot. The Works Committee recommended the carrying out of certain City improvements ; the funds to bo provided by the issue of LIO.OOO worth of debentures, the amount to be allocated equally between tho four wards ; the sum of 1.500 for the improvement of the Octagon to be charged equally against the wards ; tenders to be called for the construction of the southern market sheds, to cost L 250. exclusive of LIOO for the formation of the necessary road; that tenders lie called for the construction, of Clyde street Bridge ; and that the Provincial Council be called upon at its next session to complete the base of the monument in the Octagon. The report was adopted with the exception of that portion referring to City improvements, the consideration of which was deferred until the Finance Committee bad reported as to the propriety of raising the money proposed to be raised. Mr Barnes drew attention to the large amount of extra day labor being employed. The cost was LI 14 per mmth, exclusive of L7I for ordinary labor. It was resolved that the extra labor be dispensed with until the new works were commenced. The tender of F. Hopcraft for repairing tho Pcliciiet Hay baths for LIS 15s was accepted. The consideration of the applications for Clerk to tho Mayor’s Court was adjourned.
