COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.
The rules and regulations for the competition for the General Government prizes for the year IST I were published in a Gazette yesterday. The firing for.the Colonial prizes will take place in Auckland in March next. There are ten sets of prizes for which Folunteors, Militia, and Armed Constabulary, are eligible to become competitors, and three sets of prizes for cadets. The prizes for the ten amount to L6S2 10s in money, besides the Champion Belt, one gold medal, three silver medals, and two silver cups valued respectively at L 25 and LIO. For the cadets to win there is L 45, a cadet champion belt, and a silver medal. The sets of prizes are—lst, Judging distance ; 2nd, skirmishing ; 3rd, open to volunteers only, in two stages, from 200 to 600 yards range ; 4th, at 200, 500, and 600 yards range ; sth, at 300, 400, and 500 yards range, five shots, no prize to be given for a less score than forty points ; 6th, at 400, 500, and 600 yds. range, seven shots, no prize to be given for a less score than fifty-six points ; 7th, for rapidity; Sth, running prizes ; oth, match between representatives of North and South Islands ; and, 10th, consolation prizes. With regard to the district prizes a sum of L 46 will be given as prizes to each di-trict. There will be two sets of competitions, the first at 400, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each, for which there will be six prizes, making in all L 36. In this set none of the first three prizes will be given for a score of less than 35 points, and none of the last three prizes will be given for a less score than 30 points. The highest scorer in this set in cagh Province to receive the medal for the Province. Tlje second set 'of district prices, amounting tq- LlO (three prizes), arp to be fired at 300, 400, amt 500 yards range,
five shots at each range. For these three no parson who has won a General Government prize since the beginning of 1869 will be able t■> compete. There arc also some prizes fcr artillery practice offered, and eight prize?, amounting to L3O, to be competed for by corps armed with- breech-loading carbines. We notice that the Champion Belt, if won two years in succession by the same person, will become the absolute property of such winner, commencing with the competition held in April last.
