Tins Day. (Before lus Worship the Mayor and V. r . IT. Reynolds; Esq , J. P.) DKUKKh.VNFSa. James Quin was fined os. for being drunk. XEGLECTKD CHILD. Martha Howe, a girl of 12 years of age, was brought up as a neglected child. From the statement of George Langley, it appears that the mother of the girl lives at Hampden, and she has no friends in Dunedin. She was remanded for seven days for enquiry. ASSAULT. David Trickey was charged with unlawfully committing a brutal assault on a girl 13 years of age named Chris ina Begbie Smith. The complainant st ited that she Was passing along George street, between 6 an I 7 o’clock on the evening of the 7th imt.. when just by the Robert Burns f l ptpl the prisoner put his arm round her waist and said ‘ 1 My dear, will you come with me to the hush.” She screametj'and ran away, and the prisoner followed her into Mr Suthei* land’s shop. W. D. Sutherland confirmed the evidence of the girl. Ho said she ran into his shop very much frightened and stated that a man had assaulted her, pointing out the prisoner as the person. Witness detain; d the prisoner with the assistance of another man and gave him in charge to a policeman. Constable Hanlon proved taking the prisoner into custody. The Mayor said that the Bench considered prisoner had been guilty of a gross assault. It was one of the most dastardly that a man could commit.' It was a shame that even a little girl .could not pass along the street without being assaulted after that manner by men of the prisoner’s character. He was sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labor.
