PrinoessTheatre—The well-known Colored: Opera Troupe will give a Christy’s entertainment at the Princess’s on Friday evening. His Worship the Mayor and the City Councillors will bestow their patronage on the occasion From the known ability of this troupe to afford amusement, we may safely predict a crowded house and an enjoyable evening.

Lecture. —On Thursday evening the Rev. Father Maloney will deliver a lecture in St. Joseph’s School-room, in aid of the library fund of the Dunedin Catholic Young Men’s Association. The ehoir of the Church will assist, under M. Floury’s direction, and will sing a number of glees, duets, and songs. We trust the attendance will be such as to aid substantially in the extension of the usefulness of the institution.

Cromwell. —The local papers do not contain much information about the reefs. The last two crushings of the Bendigo Company gave a splendid return, yielding over 600 ozs. for sixteen days’ crushing, with five stamp heads. The accord battery is completed, and ten heads of stampers are now going. The Aurora Company have struck the reef, and will commence crushing shortly. The stone from the M ‘Lanchlan’s new reef is looking well, gold being visible to the naked eye all through.

The Gazette,—The following notifications appear in the N'eto Zealand Gazelle: His Excellency the Governor has assented to the following Ordinances, passed by the Provincial Council—District Roads Compulsory Land Taking Ordinance, 1870; Tokomairiro School Residence and Glebe Lands Sale Ordinance, 1870 ; Lawrence Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute Leasing Ordinance, 1870; and Oamaru Race Course Reserve Management Ordinance, 1870. Tho resignation of Captain Thomson, Port Chalmers Naval Volunteers, is accepted, and the following promotions have been made in consequence—Lieutenant J. B. Robertson to be Captain, Sub-Lieutenant Goldie to be Lieutenant, and W. A. Wilson to be Sub-i ieut. Mr E. ff. Ward to be paymaster for Supreme Court services at Dunedin. New general rules under the Lunacy Act and in bankruptcy are published. The Country. —We cull the following from our exchanges ; —A man named James Muir was apprehended last week at i ako Wanaka on a charge of indecently assaulting a young woman.—At Shanley’s farm, near Cromwell, a day or two ago, a Mr Robertson was severely injured during a pig bunt.—Mr Heller appears to have been very successful at Oamaru. On the occasion of his openingperformance the hall was cruwded, the takings amounted to over L6O. —The local paper records a gallant rescue from drowning of a girl by Mr Bicknell, postmaster, Oamaru. As this is the second occasion on which Mr Bicknell has saved a child from drown’ng, he might be fairly recommended to the Royal Humane Society by the authorities. —It is reported that an action has been brought at the instance of the Canterbury Provincial Government .against a number of sheep farmers for crossing sheep over the Waitaki without giving notice.

The Dunedin Artillery, Naval, and Ist Battalion, 0.R.V., will parade for Battalion Drill on Thursday evening, the Sth inst., in front of the Custom House at 7-30.
