PORT CHALMERS.
A regular meeting of the Port Chalmcis Town Council was held on Monday evening. Present, the Mayor and the whole of tl e members of the Council. A large number of the ratepayers were present. The minutes of the last meeting -were read and confirmed. The Mayor said, as authorised by the Council, he had waited on the Executive respecting the subsidy for fencing the flagstaff, giving over the Town Belt to the Corporation, and the water supply, and had no doubt the Government would assist them in floating their debentures. He wished to have it decided who was’to commence proceedings against Mr Toms. A letter from Mr Leek was read, asking |eaye to sub-let part of the section in his occupation. Leave wag granted. A letter from the Town Clerk of Dunedin was read with regard to licences ; one from Mr Fleming. concerning giving up possesion of the section in his occupation; one from Grant, complaining of cattle breaking into the cemetery, and stating that the fence needed repairs. The latter was referred to the Public Works Committee. Respecting Mr Towns’s case, the Town Clerk was ordered to take out a summons against him. Mr Mausford’s account was ordered to stand over until the next meeting. The consideration of the water supply was postponed until next meeting of the Council, when Mr M'Leod promised to furnish plans for the scheme free of expense. Tenders were then opened for the works in Constitution and Mary streets. The security for performing the work was left to the Mayor and Public Works Committee. The following were the tenders received Constitution street —Witlock and Morris, L 455 Is 9d ; Findlay and Co., L 609 ; John Faushaw, LDS4 3s fid; John Rattray, L 442
13s; Styles and Co, L4lfi 11s 8d; Jack* son, Roberts, and Co., L 327 18s 4d ; Stum* /* biers and Murison, L 427 ss; Caldcr and Co., L 519 17s 4d. Mary street Witlock and Morris, LSB 15s ; Findlay and Co., L 74 ; John Fan* shaw, L 49 Us 8d; John Rattray, L 37 10s; Styles and Co., L 52 10 ; Jackson, Roberts, and Co., L4l 13s 4d ; Stumbles and Munson, L6O ; Calder and Co., L 45. Mr Fcrnio moved, and Mr M'Callum seconded, that the lowest tenders be accepted. An amendment moved by Mr Clark, and seconded by Mr Gordon, that the Council retire, was adopted. On resuming, Mr Fernie moved, and Mr Innes seconded, that the tenders of Jackson and Roberts he accepted. The motion was carried.
Mr Fernie moved, and Mr Clark seconded, that tenders be called for works to be done in Cross street. An amendment moved by Mr Innes, seconded by Mr M‘Galium, that nothing be done to Cross street until the Finance Committee report. The amendment was carried.
A plan of Ajax road was laid before the Council. Mr Law moved, and Mr M‘Callum seconded, that specifications be prepared in accordance with the plan. An amendment was moved by Mr Fernie, seconded by Mr 1 M.'Kinnon, that the engineers prepare fresh plans, the cost not to exceed, three guineas. The amendment was carried,
Mr Miller asked if it was intended to give Mr Macandrew a public reception. Something should be done to signify their appreciation of the good he had done for the Port and the Province, Mr Clark was in favor of a sum of money being appropriated tq that purpose. Mr Fernie would prefer a public meeting being called to welcome.his Honor. Mr Clarke moved, and Mr M'Kinuon seconded, that five pounds bo voted for a lunch. The motion was earned. Mr Clark said Mr Dodson gave him permission to say that a coach and four would be ready to take the Superintendent to Dunedin, free of all expence. The volunteers would also turn out. The Council agreed to pay for ammunition
The Mayor and Mr Clark were appointed a reception committee. The following accounts were ordered to be paid : Dayman ... ... L 8 Morris L 9 The Council then adjourned. A committee meeting was ordered to lo held on Monday, to consider the bye-laws.
