PORT CHALMER’S MAGISTRACY.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sib, —In your issue of Saturday I observed a letter, signed “Ashlar” complaining of words used towards the J.r.’s of Port Chalmers by a speaker in the Town Council, when speaking on a subject likely to be a case for the Magistrate’s Court, and reflecting on the Mayor, as a J.P. in expectation, for not sooner calling the speaker to order. Now the real facts are that the whole Council,’ excepting Mr Miller, refused to listen to . anything of the kiud, and the Mayor not only called Mr Miller to order, but told the Council that Messrs Rolfe and Tayler, J.P.’s, would be witnesses in the case, and so could not sit as magistrates, although he (the Mayor) should be quite content with their decision; but that rough diamond, Mr Miller, thought different, and no generally says whathe thinks. But if your correspondent “ Ashlar,” who is well known to be a good mason, wishes to take a rough block of Scotch granite out of winding and polish it, he will find it a tiresome job. . , ■ Yours, &c,, EikstGrh'. Port Chalmers, August 14.
