BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
(FROM our own correspondent.) Wellington, August 6, The Union of Otago and Southland Bill was carried in the Upper House by 17 for, 7 against. The Estimates are being passed cautiously. Members are desirous of discussing the items. There was a scene in the House last night on an item of L7OO for the Government Agent, Hawke’s Bay. Messrs Rolleston, Gillies, Macandrew, and Hall defended the Provinces, and attacked Mr Ormond as Agent and Superintendent. Messrs Fox and Vogel defended Mr Ormond. The opinion of the House was against Mr Ormond, who attacked the Superintendents of Provinces, and characterised them as a greedy crew. Port Chalmers. There is a reported loss of a box containing 8G ounces of gold, belonging to a Chinese passenger per Queen of the Seas. It appears that the box was guarded on board the Golden Age on her passage from Dunedin in the afternoon, until reaching the ship’s side, when the man in charge left it to look after the luggage, and when he returned it had disappeared. The police are making every exertion to recover it.
