MAYOR’S COURT.

This Day.

(Before I. N. Watt, Esq., R.M., and G. Turnbull, Esq., J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. ... John Williams was fined ss; Robert Cashmore, 10s; Henry Taylor, 5s ; Julia Solomon, 20s; and Henry Rudd, 40s, with the alternative of three days’ imprisonment. SHOPLIFTING. Martha Abbott was charged with this offence. It appeared from the evidence 5 that yesterday evening the prisoner was caught' in the act of leaving the store of Mr C. Bunbury, in Frederick street, with two bottles of porter in her possession, which she must have taken off the counter. When “howled out,” she pretended that she intended paying for them, but her appearance and the stealthy manner in which she entered the shop left no doubt as to her intent. In her possession was found a pair of boots, but the identification of them as being the property of Messrs Inglis, George street, which it was attempted to prove, was incomplete, and on .that account the second charge against the prisoner was dismissed. Two previous convictions for shoplifting were proved, and shC was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labor. ' ... , .. .■^
