CITY COUNCIL.

Yesterday. The City Council met yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs Tboneman (in the chair), Carroll, Griffon, Wilkinson, Walter, Jack, Wilson, and Pish. The election for a Councillor for South Ward, in the place of Mr H. S. Fish, was appointed to take place on the JOth August. Appointments of poll-clerks were made. The resignation of the Inspector of Works was accepted. A report from the City Surveyor was read. Several applications were, read for permission to erect new buildings or additions to old ones, which were granted. A report from the Finance Committee was read, which was adopted. It intimated that on certain conditions, the action Mneassfy v. the Corporation would not bo further prosecuted on payment of expenses. The report of the Reserves Committee was read. Mr Walter remarked that from the limited quantity of ground for public purposes, great caution was necessary in granting ground for Volunteer purposes. Mr Griffin considered as application had been made by the Volunteers as a whole, their request should be granted. The chairman observed that twelvemonths ago application was made by one company for what was now asked for the whole body of Voluutocrs. It fell through, because L 25 annually was asked as rental. It was ultimately resolved that the ground asked for should be granted on a lease for fourteen years at a rental ef LlO a year. Tho report was adopted. Mr Wilson on a motion drew attention to the disagraceful state of the roads and footpaths, and suggested borrowing L 4,000 to L 5.000 for the purpose of repairing them. He proposed that those Councillors who did not retire this year should bo a committee to carry out tho resolution ; the committee to report within a month. Mr Griffon, although approving 'the proposal, thought it should be allowed to stand over until the new Council is appointed. The motion was carried ; members to bo appointed next meeting.
