CITY COUNCIL.

This Day. A special meeting of the Council was held this afternoon, to consider the resignation of Mr Barnes as Inspector of Works. Mr Fish was in the chair. The following letters from Mr Barnes were read:— “ July 10th, 1870. “To his Worship the Mayor and City Council. “ Gentlemen, —I here give notice that 1 shall resign my Office as Inspector of works for the City Council cn the 31st day of August, 1870, but I should bo obliged to you if yon would allow me to resign at once, as I consider it hardly right for a Public servent to serve notice. 1 hereby tender my sencero thanks to his Worship the Mayor and Councillors for the Courtship they have shown me while in Office, also the Town Clerk City Surveyor and other Officials.” “July 26th, 1870. “ To His Worship the Mayor and City’ Council, “ Gentlemen, —I wish to give notice that this is the last day that I shall act to the City Corporation as a paid Servent as Inspector of Works this 36th day of July 1870.”

“ July 26th, 1870. “ Gentlemen, —I am willing to act as an unpaid servent for a time till such time as the Council shall appoint another for one or two months but if the Council for my services wish to give any Compensation may give it to the Benevolent Institution, ou and after this date also I am willing to go to the Molleyneux to examine tho ground by the Council paying expences but nothing for my own labour and should I be elected in your honorable body as a Councillor for Leith Ward I shall always feel happy to do any thing that lies in my power for the Wellfaro of the City but 1 hope the Couned will take it into consideration and set me at liberty to-day.” On the motion of Councillor Thoneman, the immediate resignation of Mr Barnes was accepted.
