Mailer, purser. Cargo.—For Dunedin, 170 tons ; for Lyttelton, 70 tons ; for Wellington, 74 tons. Melbourne, July 16. In the import market business is quiet. Flour remains unchanged at Lll ss; wheat, 4s lOd to 5s 2|d; New Zealand wheat, an inferior sample, sold at 4s 4d. Oats are in demand at 3s 6d to 3s 7d; 400 bags of New Zealand brought 3s 6d, and 300 bags 3s 7d. Feeding barley, 3s to 3s 2d. Maize, 4s sd. Dried fruits are in demand, and currants much wanted at 4 Jd. Malt is dull of sale at 7s. Cornsacks are firm at 1 Is Gd. Mr John M‘Gee’s creditors have accepted 10s cash. A large auction sale of boots showed little competition. There is little wool offering, but prices are well maintained. New Zealand wheat sold at from 4s Gd to 4s 7d on the 15th.

The Appropriation Bill passed on the 18th.
Parliament was prorogued to-day till the Ist of September, but is not expected to meet for business till the end of October.
The Alfred Graving Dock workings recommence on Monday. The contractors advertise for a hundred masons.
Alexander Robertson, accountant, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling LIOO belonging to a widow named M'Anuff.
Judge Barry has refused Wilson’s discharge from the Lunatic Asylum on Mr M‘Kean’s application. Mary Tucker or Holly, the woman injured at the Varieties fire, died in the Hospital, Six sailors belonging to the ship Kirkwood were drowned in the bay by a boat capsizing. One body, that of a man named Roland Burley, has been recovered.
The European Assurance Company has been re-admitted by Government as guarantee for civil servants. The Government placed L7OOO in the Appropriation Bill as a gratuity to Mr J. M. Grant’s family. The proposal met with decided public opposition, and Mr Grant refused to accept the proposed compensation. A public subscription has been since inaugurated, and over LIOOO have been already subscribed. Michael O’Grady has been elected for Villlers.
Patrick Smith, a fisherman, residing at Hotham, brutally murdered hia wife, and has been committed for trial.
The decision of the Supreme Court sustained Draper’s conviction. Mr G. P. Smith, M.L.A., has inti-
mated his intention to retire from political life. Supple’s tidal comes on next week. Victorian exhibits for the Sydney exhibition are coming forward slowly. Mr Popping, formerly assistant librarian, has been appointed Parliamentary librarian. Dr. M'Farlane has been appointed Health Officer for Port Phillip. Sydney. Arrived at Newcastle —Bengal and Adeline Burke, from Dunedin, on the 11th. Mr Smalley, the Government Astronomer, is dead. The ship Silver Eagle is engaged to convey the Imperial troops home. Captain Robert Towns is dangerously ill. Mr M‘lntyre, the Presbyterian minister, is dead. Queensland. The Ministry has resigned, a dissolution is granted, and Parliament is prorogued. Edward Bowen, house agent, Bathurst street, Sydney, has committed, suicide. An attempt has been made to assassinate Mr Weber, road superintendent, near Braidwood. A bullet passed through his hat. Mr Eckford, member of the Assembly, has had his estate sequestrated. The wool sales are firm. The Mercantile Bank has declared « dividend of per cent. Mr Gardner, professor of music, is dead. Captain Parker and a sailor belonging to the ship John Bullock have been drowned near Newcastle. The Challenger’s departure is postponed to Sunday. Adelaide. A board has been appointed to investigate the alleged irregularities in the Customs department. The Captain of the ship Murray reports that on the passage from England he rescued some passengers belonging to the ship Mannin Bambino, from Genoa to River Plate, The vessel had been burned, and only thirty saved out of one hundred and twenty. Reports have reached the city that seven natives were drowned near Salt Creek, through the overwhelming floods from Queensland border. Hobart Town. David Johnston, mining manager, Fingal, has been murdered by Alfred Harrington. The Bank of Tasmania has declared a dividend of 8 per cent. Sailed from Hobart Town—Velocepede, on the 10th.
