Last night’s debate on the financial scheme was opened by Mr Fox, wbo ably defended it in a speech of one and a half hours duration. There was great acclamation on both sides of the House after an eloquent peroration* At 11.30 Mr Reader Wood moved an amendment —“ That this Committee, whilst approving of the policy of promoting immigration and public works throughout the Colony, proportionate to its resources, would, in view of an early dissolution of Parliament, prefer that the country should be consulted on the whole plans.” The debate on this amendment commences to-day, at 2.30. Mr Fox, in reply to Mr Birch as to the position of the Princes street Reserves, and how the L4OO given to Mr Man tell was disposed of, stated that Mr Mantell refuses to give any account. -Mr Birch gives notice of motion to-day to compel Mr Mantell, through the Government, to give ox p lanations as to the expenditure. Tokojuik/ko, July 14, Messrs J. L. Gillies, H, Clark, and W, Murray, M.P.C.’s, addressed their constituents last night. There was a crowded meeting. The resolution adopted only thanked the members for their addresses. Afterwards a resolution was passed in favor of Mr J. C. Brown’s Bill to repeal the Hundreds Regulation Act. IxVKKC'AKGILL, July li. Yesterday afternoon, Robert Reid, master of the lighter Brothers, when going down the river, was knocked overboard by the tiller and drowned. The anchor was dropped at once, and the boat put out, but he had sank. Two boats hayn been out dragging the harbor to-day, but have not found the .body.
