SPIRITUALISM.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —Notwithstanding the very groat interest and excitement, this so-called Spiritualism has caused in Dunedin, I am mot aware that there has been any phenomena in this city that can he vouched for, except the following, which occurred last evening, I and three other friends met at my residence in Cargill street to spend the evening, one of our number had been at several meetings or circles where furniture was moved, and communications received by the agency of a table, A’C. Wc endeavoured to give it a fair trial, though the other three were professed sceptics. We sat round a large table in the centre of the room, joined our hands, as ho directed, and all wished the table to move to a certain side, which it most plainly did, in about a quarter of an hour : several times it distinctly moved, always towards Mr S.. who had witnessed the like on several occasions. '| ! he fourth time it moved he asked if there were any spirits in the room, that wished to communicate, to which it distinctly gave three knocks : lie then asked was it his own spirit or mine or Mr B.’s, to which it replied Mr B.’s, -who then put several questions and received most accurate replies which no one In the room oquld have known save himself—there -was a light in the room the name of the young lady to whom he is to be married and in what part of the old country she resides in at present, her age to a month, which Mr B. did not himself remember until lie wont to see some letters which proved it right. The spirit was the spirit of Fanny L, and has been in the spirit world four years seven months, a fact that not one in the room know. Mrs B. who was in another rosm, vouched for the truth of that.

There were many more questions put and equally correct answers received ; the affirmative is three knocks, the negative one knock. It is the first time I have witnessed the like, and it certainly is beyond my comprehension, but still I am thoroughly sceptical, us to its being the agency of spirits. Sir, by civing publicity to the above, you will oblige many who are deeply impressed on the subject. One of our company it has alfectcd very seriously. It seems to have affected bis nervous system, and rendered him quite unfit for business, I fear for many days. 1 aw not tv believer in Spiritualism,- but

there is something la what I saw evening that really surprises me. A >-. t 1 enclose my name, but not for publication. PM. Cargiil street. July 2, 1870.
