MAYOR’S COURT.

Tins Day. (Before I, N. Watt, Esq., R.M.) RIGHTING. Isaac Casely and John Murphy alias Ryley, were charged with creating a breach of the peace by righting in Walker street. It appeared from the evidence that Murphy was the aggressor in the first instance. He was fined 40s, with the alternative of 10 days’ imprisonment, and (Casely was discharged, DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Peter Harrison and Archibald Baunatyne were each fined ss, and Amelia Gobble, an old offender, was fined 20s, with the alternative of three days’ imprisonment. OBTAINING MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENCES. John Murphy alias Ryloy, was charged with imposing on Mr Robert Fenwick, hotelkeeper, East Taieri. Tho prosecutor stated that on the 13th ult. tho prisoner was a passenger by the afternoon conch from Tokomairiro, which roachod East Taieri about five o’clock. Prisoner alighted, came into the bar and had a drink, at tho same time asking witness to cash a cheque for him. Witness asked tho amount of it, and ho replied that it was Julius’s, of Tokomairiro, for Ll2. Witness told him ho had not enough money, whereupon prisoner asked him to lot him have a low pounds, as he was only going as far as Caversham, and would return and get the balance. Witness gave him LO, taking tho document, only noticing that tho signatures appeared to bo right. It was dark at the time and his eyesight being bad ho did not clo-ely examine it, until the bar lights were lighted, about a quarter of an hour after tho coach had gone, when he discovered it was a promissory noto. [The note was produced. It was an acceptance drawn by F. Julius, and endorsed by H. Marrvatt, for Ll2 16s, and bore date April 22nd]. A witness, Lorimcr, corroborated a part of the prosecutor’s evidence. Tlje Commissioner qf Police said, that as the prisoner denied alf knowledge of the document, he had to ask for a remand to enable enquiries to be made as to how he became possessed of _it, A remand qf eight days was granted,
