Bell notice that the Lancashire Bell rongers, have arrived in Dpneilin and intend giving a series of performances' at the Masonic Hull. Tuesday ..next is fixed for the first entertainment. We have no doubt this clever company will receive the support they deserve. Princess Theatre. — We were glad to see so full a house for the benefit of Mr G. H. Swan last evening. Dr Carr was, as usual, successful in his mesmeric experiments, and that, in spite of the most determined resistance to bis influence by some of his subjects. They were eventually mesmerised and became obedient to his will. We believe that he gives bis final lecture to-night, which no doubt will be well attended. Concert. The Dunedin Private Musical Society’s Concert at the New Post Office Hall is to be-repeated on Monday evening. We have seen the programme, \Vhich presents some new features, and in the second part differs materially from that cf last week. Some very choice selections are announced of soprano solos by different ladies, and, by special request, Miss Bell will play “Les Hirondelles.” The part songs are also different, and altogether the pieces chosen are likely to please. We trust this time the weather will be genial and the concert welt supported. Mayor’s Court. —At this Court today, before I. N. Watt, Esq., 8.M., Elizabeth Wilson arias ; Forrester, was charged with stealing a suit of clothes, valued at L2 10s, from the shop door of Chas. Johnson, Maclaggan street. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months imprisonment. Elizabeth Webster was; charged with receiving the goods, knowing thonr to have been stolen. On the evening of the 20th inst., the day the goods were missed by Mr Johnson, the prisoner ple lgcd them at the pawn office of Mr A. Solomon, George street. When arrested by ’ Detective Farrell, she said they belonged to her husband, but in the dock stated they were given to her by Wilson. The Magistrate gave her the benefit of the doubt, and discharged her.

Spiritualism. —By permission, we publish the following communication, with the intimation that it was received under unfavorable circumstances, and that the spiritual world is to be further questioned on thefsubject“Night before last, at 8.30, it .was communicated at a seance that H. M.S. Blan’che was off the'coast of New Zealand, bound for the Bounty islands. That she would cruise round them two days and a half, and then steer for the north end qf the Auckland Islands where she would find the remnant of the crew and passengers of the M.taoka, BJie would afterwards cruise round the Auckland and some other islands, wh ch would occupy about eight daysj after which she would start for Wellington, where she would arrive within three weeks.” This Defence Minister.—lt would appeag that so far hack as February last ’Mr M ‘Lean received the offer of the distinction of Companion of tho Order of St. Michael and St. George. The Imperial despatch announfing it is in the following terms", — “Dowling street, 28th January, 1870. Sir —I have much pleasure in authorising you to offer to Mr Donald M‘Lean the distinction of Companion of the Order of St. Michael aud St. George. I am aware, both from your despatch of Ist September last and from other sources, of the high character which Mr M'Lean has.long borne-as a public officer. But in making this offer at the present moment I desire particularly to recognise the value ,®f bis services in opening negotiations which promise a permanent pacification of New Zealand. W Jiether or not that promise is fulfilled, the Colony has a great reason to he satisfied with the skill with which he has commenced his task, and Mr M'Leau with the confidence which his character commands frofiv the leaders of the Maoris.—l have, &c., Giinville. Governor Sir Geprge Bow ; oii.; G.G.ADG.” Co.M.i£U NIC'ATI ON WITH E NOLAND. — A London correspondent writes : —“The contract entered into by the New Zealand Government in reference to the Californian Mail Service 'has disarranged ‘negotiations going-on hero with an influential company called tiro Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Corporation, which proposes running steamers from Milford Haven to Portland (America), then conveying mails by rail to San Francisco, and:thence to Sydney, calling at some South Sea Island, probably Tahiti or New Caledonia, from whence $ branch steamer would run to Wellington with mails and passengers- to New Zealand. The French Government, view it favorably, and are supposed to subsidise it, and other .small subsidies besides besides that of New Zealand are expected. The Commissioners bad promised a subsidy on behalf of New Zealand, but their having temporarily withdrawn it .until they have information as to : the continuance or not of the line at present established has kept the company hack .considerably—leading to the belief that it was putting forth unwarranted grounds of support—capitalists being easily alarmed at any appearance of suspicion -about public -companies.” From the papers presented to Parliament by the Postmaster-General, we learn that the company has since been registered, and has purchased the steamers Kaikorai, Rakaia, and Kaikora. We notice by an advertisement in another column that a pamphlet—Christianity v. Spiritualism— has been issued; • The Rev.' Robert Idcrimgeour is announced to preach at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to-morrow morning and evening, aud at Caversham to-morrow afternoon. By advertisement we notice that, in consequence of the creek washing away the landing place at Oamaru, no goods can be landed°or shipped until the creek is diverted. The North Dunedin Volunteer Riflemen will meet for commanding officer’s parade and adiutaut’s inspection at the company’s drill shed, on Monday, at 7.30 p m. All' Government buff belts and shoulder straps and spare rifles to be brought in. The Commercial Building and Investment Society will hold its fortnightly meetings for receiving subscriptions and applications for shares at the office, Princes street, and also at Port Chalmers on Monday evening from 6 to 8 o’clock. iIT will be seen by the advertisement that twer old and esteemed acquaintances

Mr Darrell will truly find- himself “At Home” in Dunedin, and we have no hesitation in saying will be gladly welcomed by his old friends, whose friendly greeting will be equally extended to lus partner. Thau visit will only be very brief, as they purpose sailing for Wellington on Tuesday.
