On Dit.—We are given to understand that the appointment of Registrar of the Supreme Court at Dunedin, lias been conferred on a member of the Civil Service. It is said that the appointment has been made in this maimer with a view to economy, the gentleman appointed being already in the Government service, hut not a solicitor. This information is rather startling, inasmuch as it was understood that the appointment would be conferred upon a local provincial candidate, in fact, upon a well known member of the legal profession in Dunedin. The Wax Works.—We are glad to see that this interesting exhibition is receiving its fair share of public support. We can cordially recommend it as atiording a good evening’s entertainment. Strike. —We learn that the carpenters at Christchurch are out on strike for 10s a day, their wages having been reduced to 7s or 8s per diem. The Assembly. —We understand that arrangements have been made for the conveyance of members of the General Assembly to Wellington by the Phaihe, which will leave here on tho 10th insb., arriving at Wellington on the evening of the P2th. Tho Assembly meets on the 14th. Princess Theatre.—A complimentary benefit will be given to Mrs J. B. Steele tins evening by the members of the Garrick Club. From the excellent nature of the programme provided, and the fact that this talented lady will personate the principal character, we may fairly predict not only a good evening’s entertainment, but an overcrowded bouse.
Supreme Court, To-day in the case of Anderson v. Burke, an application was made by Mr Barton, defendant’s solicitor, for an order calling upon the plaintiff to bring in verified and complete accounts within 24 hours. After argument it was decided that the Registrar should proceed in the matter of accounts forthwith.
North Dunedin Drill Shed. —We are glad to learn that the amateur Colored Opera Troupe have kindly consented to give an evening’s entertainment in the North Dunedin Drill Shed, on the loth inst., in aid of the fund for altering the shed. The committee of the North Dunedin Mutual Improvement Association deserve congratulation on their successful effort to make the shed comfortable, as it has already been found useful for public purposes. No doubt the Colored Opera Troupe will draw a good house. The programme will be issued iu a few days.
Masonic- Hall.—The inclemency of the weather last evening proved insufficient to deter persons from visiting this popular entertainment. Dr Carr was successful in his treatment of the subjects operated upon and the usual fund of amusement w,as caused by tpe antics and grotesque demeanour of those in the gataloptic state. A rich treat is promised th'.s evening, as the doctor has undertaken to make a individual whilo under his influence dance ‘.‘Pyi'fcct Cure.**
The Evangelist, —The June number in additien to the usual articles contains an account of a Mission Tour amongst the Maoris in the North Island. This narrative is the more interesting, on account of the mistake that was so universal before the rise of Hau-hauism, that the Maoris had accepted Christianity. A searching investigation as to the causes! of their apostacy might be productive' of mpeh benefit in conducting mission labors in futn'C- In addition to these there are controversies! articles, a critical notice of Calvin’s works, .and'a ipas-s of general intelligence, some of which is very interesting.
Manufactures. —In a letter yesterday a cm-resnon ’cut alluded to the increasing value and quantifies of our local manufactures, and especially ifipfiod to the manufacture of malt whisky at ti,e distillery of Messrs Howdeu and Co. Having had opportunity of testing the quality of the spirit produced there, we cap without hesitation recommend it in proferpu.ee tp most of that imported. Although the Distillery has only beep at work so short a'tiipe, the supples we tasted had begun to put on the meUoyvnpss which is usually supposed to be tiac special attribute pf age. The flavor was fully equal to the best brands, ami umnistakeablc as to purity. With these qualifications tp recommend the spirits' distilled in Dunedin, it is not matter for surprise that the demand for it is great and on the increase, and that tiuje alone is required to place Messrs Howcleifis manufactures on an equality with the very best .imported.
Dunedin Private Musical.Society. —The coming concert is likely to be very effective. The first part will be taken from “ Haydn’s Creation, ” an oratorio seldom heard in the Colonies to advantage, through the absence of instrumental accompaniments. Those, though still minus the grand support of an organ and some wind instruments, will be efiicienily supplied by the members of the Society. The secular part, we believe, will be sufficiently varied to sustain interest. Mr May, the conductor, has been indefatigable in preparing both vocalists and instrumentalists, so that it may reasonably be anticipated the concert will excel what the Society has hitherto achieved.
Mining Notes. — The following items are taken from the Tuape-lea Times :—That there are quartz reefs in abundance in tlie neighbourhood of Lawrence is certain, but whether there are any payable ones lias not yet been sufficiently proven, Mpssrs Tnckcy and Apsley, who have been working alluvial ground in a gully leading from the mouth of Gabriels, have come across a very promising reef. They inform us that gold is distinctly visible in the casing, but as neither of them is well acquainted with quartz reefs, they would like to get the opinion of a practical
man as to its character. If it could be proved payable, we have no doubt capital might be raised without much difficulty to work it. Coombe’s party, having finished their race, put in a blast of half a ton of powder, and have been washing away the fall of cement brought down by it. They have washed up, and the result is stated, but not authoritatively, at L4OO. The Canada, Quartz beef has been leased on tribute fora period of two yeais. Those who have leased are some of the shareholders who have been working at it since its opening, and who may be presumed to form as accurate a judgment as any, of its prospects. Dinner to Judge Ward. — A -farewell dinner was given last evening at the Club Hotel, High street, to his Honor Mr Justice Ward on the occasion of his leaving Dunedin. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather every chair was occupied, the attendance comprising Mr Justice Chapman, his Honor the Superintendent, his Worship the Mayor, nearly all the members of the bar, and a number of our leading citizens. Mr E. B. Cargill occupied the clnir and Mr W. A. Tolmie acted as vice-chairman. After doing .ample justice to a dinner which reflected the highest credit on Mr Proud, the usual loyal toasts were given, and then the chairman proposed the toast of the evening, “ His Honor Mr Justice Ward ” in appropriate terms. In doing so he read a letter from Mr Wilson Gray to Mr Macassey, expressing his regret that in consequence of its being his court day at Tokomairiro, he would bo unable to be present. The least was drunk with all the honors, and Mr Ward made a suitable reply, acknowledging the uniform and courteous treatment be has experienced at the bauds of the profession and the public generally since his arrival here. He expressed his warmest thanks for the reception given him that night, an 1 his regret at leaving Dunedin, whore he had received so much tendent,” “ The Mayor and Corporation,” “The Bar,” “The Press,” “The Ladies,” and sundry other toasts were afterwards given, and responded to, a number of songs wore sung, and the evening passed off in the most agreeable manner.
