The Commissioner also agrees with the request for additional police protection for Oamaru, but points out that both proposals entail an expenditure in the first place for buildings and repairs of L6OO ; and a subsequent annual charge as follows; Gaoler, L2uo ; two warders, L 328 ; rations, clothing, Ac., L3OO ; additional police, L 1,045 ; total, L 1,042 13s 7d. The Fatal Accident at the Taieri. —Full particulars of the accident by,which the Lawsons (fa!her and son) lost their lives are to band, and it \vould appear that they were sacrificed solely on account of the obstinacy of the father. On the sth hist, the Lawsons, and two men named Amess and Miniroc, left Nasehy on their way to Hamilton in a baker’s cart belonging to the former. On arriving at the ford of the Taieri, which was bank high, Amess expressed the opinion that it was not (it to cross ; hut the elder Lawson replied that he must cross, and ho did not care so long as the bread in the cait was not wet. Munroc and Amess thereupon declined to go across with him ; hut in accordance with their suggestion, the horse was taken out of'Th'6 cart'.’ Larsen ordered his son to mount the animal and cross, hut the hoy said he did not like, whereupon Ins father got angry, and putting the horse hack into the cart, ordered the little fellow to jump in, and began the attempt to -cross. Ihe horse was at once taken out of his depth ; and although the men on the bank kept warning him of his danger in such terms as these—“ Tommy, you have had enough ; that horse will never take you across -he persisted in the attempt. Hardly had he turned the horse’s head a second time in the direction of the opposite side, when the cart was swept down the stream, and father and sou were struggling in the water. Those on the shore were unable to render the slightest assistance to those drowning. A verdict of “ accidentally drowned ” was returned at the coroner s inquest.
