RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
This Day. (Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M.) Civil Cases. Win. Rogers v. T. Kerr—L2 16s, for goods supplied. A set off was put in and allowed. Briscoe v. Broadway and Iverson—Dismissed for non appearance. Stevenson v. Stevens—L2 15s for house rent. Judgment by consent. H. Wise v. J. Mackay—Ll3 7s, for stationary supplied. Mr Cook for plaintiff, Mr Ho worth for defendant. The defence was that it was part of a larger claim, and that the prices were overcharged. After hearing the evidence, it was suggested that the matter should be referred to arbitration, which was agreed to R, Jenkins v. R. Munro—L4 6s, for board and lodging. His Worship in giving judgment, said when plenty of men in tho country were working for 15s a week with board and lodging, tho rate charged by plaintiff, 15s, was, he thought, excessive. Judgment would bo given for L2 11s, and costs. Mr Harris, who appeared for the defendant, said he knew persons in Dunedin who took in lodgers at 4s per week. His Worship remarked that when persons with carts sold potatoes in the streets at 281bs for a shilling, and everything else was iu proportion, he could not but thing that even 15s a week was excessive. These things one could see walking along the streets.
