Commercial.

Eveninn Star Office, Monday evening. The amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared for consumption to-day, was £634 9s Id, viz. .‘ Brandy, £ll3 4s lid; whiskey, £B2 3s lid; rum, £43 4s Od ; geneva, £llO 12s 6d ; wine, £4 15s; tobacco, £B9 10s ; sugar, £65 8s 9d ; tea, £35 Os ; coffee, £2019s 9d; drapery, £53 18s 4d ; sundries, £ls 11s Id. Gold duty, £321 5s 7d. By the Rangitoto, we have Melbourne files to the 25th inst. The Argus of that date reports:—Business in the import markets has no shown signs of activity; and we have, in consequence, little to report of any special interact. There is, however, a promise of bettjjßhings, and it is now fully anticipated thatUiter the departure of the mail steamer trade will assume a more healthy and satisfactory tone. Breadstuff's are steady, though sales of either flour or wheat are on a very moderate scale. Trade parcels of flour ase quitted at Lll 10s to Lll 15a ; but offers of 5s and under for larger lines would not be refused. Wheat comes forward too sparingly to admit of anything like transactions of an extensive character; moreover, the millers now do not show much disposition to purchase more than is requisite to keep their mills going. The arrival of Californian breadstuff's in Sydney has not had much effect here, though it is evident that there is less prospect of a renewal of shipments from Victoria to New South Wales. Fine Victorian wheat is saleable at 5s to 5s Id. Maize is quiet, owing to the high prices demanded. Only 700 bags have come forward by the steamer from Sydney, and under the circumstances from 4s 3d to 4s 4d is not considered too high to ask. We have not heard of any sales at our quotation. Oats are easier if anything. Holders would not object to offers of 3s to 3s 2d for fair samples. Comsaoks are still in favor at 10s 6d to 10a 74d in bond ; there is, however, less inquiry for duty-paid parcels. Candles are in good request, chiefly for export ; but the stiffness of holders in many instances acts as a check upon business in that market. In liquids, we hear of sales of Henneasy’s case brandy at 26s 4d.
