When love, and hops, and friendship grew ’Midst new-born summer’s flowers ; When through the lanes the merry swain* And blithesome maidens tripped so gay, To join the thrush, round scented bush, In welcoming the first of May. May now is not the May we know, Tho sky has on its sable gown, And yonder mount of sullen hue, Like grim despair, is gazing done. ’Tis not the same, ’tis but the name That warms our hearts with mesjfjy's ray ; And woos a sigh for days gone by And friends that meet no move in May. Thomas Brackjsn. Dunedin, May Ist,
