Auckland, April 2nd, The Government received a despatch from Opotiki yesterday, which contained the following On the 25th of March Major Eopata attacked the Maraettai Pa, and captured it after an hour’s engagement. Owing to the slight resistance, Eopata did not think To Kooti was present. The garrison abandoned the pa after an hour’s fighting. The fugitives fell into the hands of Kemp, who was marching down after taking prisoners, who were all Whakatoheas, up the river. The total number killed on tbe enemy’s side was 19; the prisoners taken over 300. No loss is reported by Eopata. Te Kooti escaped with twenty followers. His track was towards Waimanawa, but he must have doubled back, as tbe following party reached Te Ronga, and found the Uriwera had all deserted him. Rakuraku and others also got off. Hakaria was killed. The whole force and prisoners are expected at Opotiki on Ist April.
