Table Hill Quartz Mining Company.—Our hopes in the finding of a highly payable reef at the Table Hill are not yet crushed. We have been informed that a new reef was struck on Wednesday of a promising nature. It is near the Ocean View reef, and was found 12 feet from the surface. 'I he reef is two feet wide, within confined walls, and casing good.— Standard. Electoral. —The Standard is informed that Mr R. Gillies will come forward as a candidate for Caversham ; and we hear it rumored that Mr Gotten may probably offer to stand, in room of Mr Cargill, for the Bruce district This, however, is a mere rumor ; but it is highly desirable th.it a proper representative should be secured. To take the steps that may be thought necessary for this purpose, a meeting of electors will be held on Tuesday evening, in the new Council Hall.—Wo hear that Mr J. L. Gillies is likely to contest the seat for Brace. The Circus.—lt is not often that the inhabitants of Dunedin have opportunity of witnessing feats of horsemanship as performed in the Circus. In fact, it is some years since an equestrian troupe visited the City. But our turn has come at last. Messrs Bird, Blow, and Wills, after a lengthy tour through New Zealand have arrived, and have taken the Princess Theatre, where they purpose appearing on Wednesday evening. At Auckland, and other places which they have visited they are highly spoken of. Several of the company are known by reputation as skilful artists, they are Mr T. Bird, Morris, Murray, Herr Christoff, Signor Salavario, Young American, Mr H. Wallace, Lilliputian Charlie, Madame Anarcau, and Miss Annie Norman.

Eire.—A little before two o’clock this afternoon the lire-hell ran", ami a cloud of smoke rising at the hack of the Canongate indicated a lire in that direction. The Fire Brigade turned out with commendable alacrity, and taking the small hand-pumps with them proceeded to the locality of the fire, which was a right-of-way off Elm row. The tenement was of the description commonly known as a shanty, and was occupied by a woman named Anderson; but by the time the Brigade arrived it was almost burned to the ground. There was very little property destroyed. It is not known how the fire originated. The woman had been away from the place some teu minutes before, leaving a lire burning on the hearth ; but from the fact that she was not in a sober condition, it is supposed that she placed some combustible materials too close

to it. The promptitude of neighbors prevented the spread of the fire to the adjacent cottages. We have received the March number of the Illustrated New Zealand Herald. It contains an excellent view of the Walker street church (St. Andrews), and several views of Australian scenery. A general meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club will be held at the Empire Hotel this evening on business of importance. A full attendance is requested. It will be seen by the advertisement; that a fresh arrangement has been made with Mr Barlow, and that instead of the Octagon, the exhibition occupies the vacant ground behind the old Post Office. Wc have no doubt the feats of the dogs and monkeys will be well worth seeing, and that they will contribute greatly to a pleasant hour’s amusement.
