ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The weekly meeting of the council of the Society was held this afternoon. There were present—Messrs W. D. Murison (in the chair), Garrick, Oliver, Shennan, Hepburn, and Thomson. The Manager reported the receipt of six pheasants from the Canterbury Society, two paradise ducks from Mr W. P. Gordon, and that he had liberated six pheasants at Mr Wilson’s, Pomahaka. It was resolved to send two of the paradise ducks at the Depot to Mr Graves, Secretary of the Hobart Town Society. A letter was read from the Canterbury Society, asking for information in regard to the Society’s late shipment of insectivorous birds by the Warrior Queen, for the guidance of the Canterbury Society, which intended having a shipment brought out; and a communication from Mr J. Fulton, H.M., enclosing a donation of L 5, and promising to use his best endeavors towards a collection in the Taieri distriat in aid of the funds. The hon. Secretary reported the appointment of Mr Holman, as collector, who had collected in two days the following sums Bates, Sise, and Co., LI Is; Mr Jackson, LI 1 ; Mr E. P. Kenyon, L 5 ; Mr P. Selby, LI ; Mr Garrick, LI; Mr Martin, LI ; Mr Oliver, LI ; and Mr Logan, LI Is. The Chairman brought under the notice of the Council the desirability of some steps being taken with a view to recommend to the Government proposals with reference to the establishment of forest plantations throughout the Province ; and thought the Council would be performing a very important part of the functions to bring up a report of the subject, and lay it before the Government before next meeting of Council. As far as he could see that was the only way in which they could make such a report ■which ■would receive it full weight, would be to appoint a committee to prepare one, which on being confirmed by the Council, should be laid before the Government for discussion. After some discussion the Chairman was deputed to draw up a report The meeting then adjourned.
