HindoX. —Mr Bathgate, on behalf of himself and others, shareholders in the Nil Dcspcrandum Quartz Mining Company, has put in an application for 1G acres 2 roods at Mullochy Gully, near Hindon, at or near the cancelled claim of the Union Jack Company. The Matoaka.—The announcement regarding the arrival of the Matoaka may, after all, he a mistake. Wc learn from our Wellington contemporaries that the special telegram in the Sydney Morning Herald runs
thus :—“ London, Ifttli December. —Arrived, Ramsay ; Matoaka posted at Loyd’s as missing.” The Court.—By the last mail the .Secretary to the Athenaeum received a letter from Sir George Grey, stating that the address thanking Her Majesty the Queen for her present of “ Leaves from the donrnal of our Life in the Highlands,” has been presented to her by Sir d. Cowell, and Her Majesty lias signified that she was much pleased with the address, and the mode by which the thanks of the Institute were conveyed. Thatcher’s Concerts. —Mr Small takes his benefit this evening at the Masonic Hall. A special programme has been provided for the occasion ; and whilst we are sure that the entertainment will afford great amusement, we may be equally certain, from the fact of Mr Small’s being so deservedly popular, that there will be a crowded house. Extortion. —In the Mayor’s Court this morning, a cab driver w'as lined 20s for charging excessive fare on Sunday last. It appeared from the evidence, he had insisted upon one shilling each from two passengers, the fare that used to be payable on a Sunday, but by a recent change in the Bye-laws, he was only entitled to charge six-pence. The oamaru Dock.—The members of the trust, at their last meeting, resolved to advertise for a competent engineer to prepare plans and specifications for the works, applications to be forwarded to the chairman by March ,‘ll. In the course of discussion it was stated that Messrs Pierce, W alkem, and Peyman, of Dunedin, intended to tender for the work. Carandinis’ Concert. —Miss Fannie Carandini takes a bcnclifc at St. Georges Hall to-morrow (Thursday) evening, when we trust this accomplished young lady will he favored with a full house. We notice that the Carandini company arc abont to proceed to Tokomairiro, where they will give an entertainment on Wednesday next, and at (Jlutha Ferry on Thursday evening, the 17th inst. ; and we most cordially wish them every success. As the stay of these ladies is so limited, wo commend all in Dunedin who have not heard them not to neglect the opportunity of doing so. Lake Wax aka. — Writing from Pembroke, Lake Wanaka, under date the sth lust., a correspondent states: —“We have just been engaged in a ceremony of some importance to the trade of the distinct, viz., the launch of the clipper schooner Eureka, which took place on Wednesday the 2nd. The vessel was built by Messrs Penn and Hassing, of Pigeon Island. Her length is 14 feet 0 inches overall, with a depth of hold of 7 feet, and (registered to carry 49 tons. On the dog shores being knocked from under the vessel, she glided gracefully into the lake, amidst the hearty 'cheers of the spectators. Afterwards the party sat down to luncheon, and a very agreeable afternoon W’as spent.
