He stated the object of fthe Company was not dictated by a desire for individual gain ; that it had been called into existence to supply a great public want, and when the park was made it would at any time bo glad to hand over the property to the Government for a fair compensation for the money expended. He said the company were willing to accept the lease upon any reasonable terms which the Board might suggest. A conversation between the members took place, after which Mr Duncan proposed and Mr Reid seconded, “That the application be granted conditional on the rules and regulations of the company being submitted and approved by the Board, the rental to be L 5 per annum.” The application was opposed by Mr Hughes, on the ground that the Board should not entertain the application until more definite information as to the real objects and construction of the company was before them. The application was opposed by Mr Connell, on the ground that the same land had been applied for by Mr Ewing for a like purpose some time since, and his application had not been disposed of, and therefore if the land was to be sold, he had a first claim to purchase. The application was refused.
