THE ISLAND BLOCK.
Report of the Commission appointed to enquire into matters connected with the Island Block. “ To His Honor the Superintendent of Otago. << Sir—The Commissioners, having carefully examined the correspondence and taken evidence relative to the sale of the Island Block, recommend the Government to print __ copies of the same, as herewith forwarded, for circulation. " That for the future, leases in blocks in goldfields under the Act should be granted to intending settlers, rather than an absolute sale of the laud made ; and that in the survey of the blocks, the surveyor should be instructed to adhero as near as may be to the lines adopted by the applicants for 1.6(1869 " That in blocks not yet open for selection for agricultural settlement, surveys should be effected before applications are received. “ The Commissioners consider that the Island block should have been leased to the applicants instead of sold, and that lands in the goldfields should bo sold by licensed auctioneers.
