DUNEDIN SCHOOL REPORTS.

The following annual report of the Dime* din School Committee for the year 1869, was read at the statutory district meeting held in the Middle District School, Stuart street, January 10th, 1870 : “ Your committee have to report an increase in the attendance at the three schools of about 150 pupils ; and an increase in fees of L 69 2s 9d. The fees received in 1868 amounted to L 1289 7s Cd ; ditto-in 1869, to LI 368 10s 3d, “ The following salaries have been paid to the teachers, inclusive of the Government contribution, and bonuses for instruction of pupil teachers, viz. :—Middle School: head master, L 334 7s lOd ; second master, L 234 7s lOd ; matron, L 166 17s 100. North School: headmaster, L 319 11s 5d ; second master, L 229 11s 5d ; matron, LI 69 11s sd. South School : head master, L3lB 18s 5d ; second master, L 217 12s 2d : ; matron, Ll6O 3s ad. “ The committee are satisfied, from recent examinations, that not only has tfie educational standard of former years been fully maintained, but in several respects a marked improvement has taken place. The exhibits in the industrial department, and also in mapping, drawing, painting,, illuminated manuscript, and the higher branches of arithmetic were very satisfactory, some of them being of peculiar excellence. “ In last year’s report, reference was madp to Ihe want of additional accommodation, This has been provided during the past year’ by f.bo erection of an extra plass-rqom at each of the schools of sufficient dimensions to accommodate from 120 200 pupils each, so that on resuming duty after the holidays the teachers will commence under more favorable circumstances. In addition to this enlargement, the whole of the classrooms are in course of being repainted, and placed in a state of thorough repair. Your committee have also to report that through the liberality of the Government the new class-room at the South School has been erected upon a section of land purchased during the year. “The following appointments have been made during the year:—Mr Stables to the second mastership of South School; ' Miss Isabella Hay, matron of Middle School; and Misses Fisher, Battson, M‘Fie, Waterhouse, and Langmuir to be pupil-teachers. “ Miss Stevens’s apprenticeship having expired, she lias been engaged on the staff’ of the Middle SchooUaud received at the rate of L 25 per annum out of the school fees, in addition to L"5 paid by the Government. “The question of the distribution of the school fees has now been amicably settled, and since the 30th September last, each of the three schools have been practically independent of the others, the fees received at each being now paid to the teachers thereof respectively. “The committee desire to tender their thanks to the numerous friends who have contributed prizes at the late examination, viz., Messrs Haymau, Fcldhcim Brothers, Mrs Birch, Mr B. Murray, Messrs Hay Bros, Mr George Turnbull, M.P.C., Mrs Turnbull, Mr Walters, M.C.C., Mrs Walters, Mrs H. F. Hardy, Messrs Tolield, Taylor, li. Ramsay, Mrs Meluish, Miss Williams, Messrs Wise, Joseph Mills, Gilchrist, Carroll, Baird, Begg, Mrs Douse, Mrs Telfer, Messrs Beaver, Hislop, Smith, Rev. Mr Sutherland, Messrs Fellows, Muiller, Cavalier, Mrs Murphy, Messrs Reith and Nicholson, Reichilt, Stuart Hawthorne, Abram, R. B. Martin, E. Quick and Stuart. “ Donors for drill prizes Drs Hulme, Hocken, and Sorley, and Messrs Throp, Beaver, Wise, Scoular, Woodland’ and Scaulan. “The committee desire to thank the donors who contributed flic sum of £l(j 6s 6d, referred to in the balance-sheet, “ The committee have also the pleasure to report that the prizes of L 5, L 3, and LI, and also two extra prizes in the shape of books, offered for competition among the schools of the Province by fixe Caledonian Society of Otago, were all gained by pupils of the Dunedin District Schools— four of the prizes having been awarded to the pupils of the South School, and one to a pupil of the North School. “It is with profound sorrow your committee refer to the sad accident winch caused the death of Miss Ross, late teacher in North Dunedin School. The following r solution was passed at a recent committee meeting with reference thereto ‘ Resolved, that the Education Committee desire to express their heartfelt sympathy with the parents of Relate Miss Ross on the unexpected and sudden bereavement they have sustained by the recent lamentable accident, resulting in her death. They also desire to pla-.e on record in their minutes their appreciation of her excellence and promise as an. einctentdesreher, and that her decease is felt as a severe loss to the School Committee.’ “ The committee feel it their duty to acknowledge the cordial and prompt assistance they have received from the Education

Board in nil matters they have hnd occasion to bring under their notice, during their term of office, “ The committee also desire to express their high sense of the efficiency and cordial co-operation of the masters, mistresses, and teachers of the several schools, without ■which any efforts of the committee in promoting the work of the schools must have been unavailing. “Your committee refer with pleasure to the establishment of the University of Otago during the past year, which forms the coping stone of our educational institutions, of which the Province may be justly proud.” The balance sheet - for the ■ year 1869 showed the revenue of the committee to be as follows :—Middle District School: Balance from last year, L 3 12a ; school fees (ordinary), L 420 Is 8d ; special fees, LOS 4s Cd ; Government fee for poor scholars, L 73 8s 9d ; making a total of L 595 6s lid. The expenditure for. the year for this school was L 540 15s sd, leaving a balance of L 54 11s Gd.—North Dunedin-School : School fees (ordinary), L 364 Is sd; special fees, LB7 15s ; Government fees, L6O 3s 9d ; received from Government for repairs of building, &c., L 33 ; making a total of L 547 Os 2d. The expenditure was L 564 12s 6d, being an excess of expenditure over receipts of LI 7 12s 4d.—South Dunedin School: School fees (ordinary),. L 326 5s 9d ; special fees; L72:ls lid; Government fees, L 22 3s 9d ; making a total of L 420 lls sd. The total expenditure was L 492 7s 7d, being an excess of expenditure over receipts of L7l 16s 2d. The total revenue and expenditure of the committee (the three schools), allowing for all amounts to receive or pay, is shown to be—revenue, L 1,691 Os 3d; and the expenditure, L 1,723 9s lid, being an exc ss of expenditure over revenue of L 32 9s Bd.
