MR. M'ASLAN’S SCHEME.
To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sm,—With reference to the scheme put forth by Mr M‘Aslan for transporting ships across the Isthmus of Darien, I have to state for his information, as ■well as your correspondent “ C.E.,” that it is now about forty years since the late Mr Peter Marshall, clock and watch maker, of South Queensferry, submitted the same scheme to the British 0»vernment, who appointed a commission to make inquiry regarding it. What that commission did was never known, and the propounder, being a poor man, was unable to follow the scheme further ; and getting disgusted at the apathy of the Government,
gave it tipi hating at its request prepared plans in detail, for which he was never even thanked. *’ _ . My only object in penning these lines is to give honor to whom honor is due, and there are many respectable persons in Dunedin who can vouch for the truth of the above. Trusting, sir, to your impartial justice to publish this, —I remain, yours, &e., P. F. M. Dunedin, 13th January, 1870.
