The Maori prisoners leave for the South, per Rangatira, as soon as the weather permits. They are seventyfour in number. Their sentences are commuted to various terms, from three to seven years. Tauroa is in the latter category. This includes all the Pakikohi hapu, except an old man discharged, and two boys to be placed on board the Blanche. A party from the Ngatiporou garrison, Waihi, while scouting, came on a party of Tito Ko want’s men at Ngapuhi. Three men and two women were captured ; two men trying to escape were shot. They were well-known rebels and werearmed with double barrelled guns. The old woman taken tells a circumstantial story of Te Kooti’s being at Upper Waitara, close to Tito Kowaru, who was badly wounded but is recovering. Cromwell, Wednesday. Butler and party, whose claim adjoins that of Colclouglx and Company, at Bendigo Gully, have found the reef, and brought out specimens as rich as Colclough’s. Parties are arriving from Clyde and the district, for the purpose of taking uj> claims on the reef. A rush is expected. Christchurch, Wednesday. A smart shock of earthquake was felt here at 1 a.m, to-day.
