A fresh impetus is about to be given to the Library movement in Ayr, by a suggestion which has been made by several of the descendants and relatives of Burns. Their views are embodied in the following memorial, which is beautifully illuminated, and will, in after d tys, be presented to the gentlemen to whom it is addressed : To the Honorable the Trustees or the Monument at Ali.oway, Ayr. The memorial of the un’ersigned descendants ard r lalives of Robert Bums the Ayrshire Poet — Humbly shcwMh— I. That your nu moridista understand that under the new arrangements for admitting ho public to view the monument there is likely t;> bo some considi rable sum of money remaining, after defraying necessary expenses. 11. That your memorialists are informed that efforts are being made to establish a pub ic library and reading room in Ayr. 111. That your memorialists beg respectfully to suggest to the Trustees that the surplus funds might, with great adva tage to tho library and in strict accordance with the object for which the monument was erected, be given to the public library, on condition that it should be called tho “Bums Library,” or.otherwise associated with the name of the poet. IV. Your memorialists would further add that in acting on their suggestion you would not only confer a great and lasting benefit on the inhabitants of Ayr, but great and special favor to your memorialists, who feel convinced that it would he a source of the greatest gratification to all tho Poet’s true admirers, as it would be to themselves, to know that tho funds derived from such a source should be applied to intellectual improvement, a subject which always evoked the Poet’s warmest sympathy, and received his ready support. A library, thus assisted, would be a new link connecting tho Port with his countrymen of the present generation, while it would bo another attract! n in tho “ Laud of Burns.” (Signed) Wm.
