RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

This Day. (Before J. Fulton, Esq., R.M.) ASSAULT. John Reid, carrer, was charged with as-s.-.u ting George Plummer. It appeared from the cv.dence that one day last week, Reid, who had been employed as a carrier by a man nam'd Smith, went to the Robert Burns Hotel, George street, and there saw the complainant, his successor, and demanded some blankets be bad left on a dray. The latter refused to deliver them up without his employer’s permission. Reid thereupon struck him with a heavy piece of wood, inflicting wounds of a serious character. —If answer to Mr Ward, who appeared for the defence, the complainant admitted having used bad language towards Reid; but he denied having struck him with an iron bucket. —The Magistrate, in giving judgment, observed that if the complainant had not given the defendant some provocation, he would have sent the latter to gaol without the opt on of a fine. He imposed a fine of L 5 and costs, which the defendant did not seem inclined to pay, and consequently he was removed in the custody of a policeman. PETTY OFFENCES. William K. Conzens was fined 10s and costs for allowing the chimney of his house to take fire.—Alex. Wilson was charged, on remand, with plying for lure off the cabstand in Manse street, fliie case was dismissed with caution. —James Armstrong was fined 10s and costs, for allowing cattle to stray, and Mrs Sutherland was fined 5s and costs for neglecting to keep her premises clean.—Mrs Kimberly and Rebecca Mnrcott, for the same offence, were respectively lined 10s and 20s, together with costs. Another charge of the same character preferred against the last-mentioned defendant was withdrawn Arthur Rawlings was also charged with neglecting to keep his premises clean. It appeared that the nuisance complained of existed on Mrs Murcott’s premises; and therefore the case was dismissed.
