MR J. L. GILLIES’S TOUR.

(From the Bruce Standard.)

Mr Gillies lias returned from his official tour through the various goldfields of the Province. We are not in a position to give a detailed account of what Mr Gillies has accomplished, but wc feel justified in saying that his visit will be attended with most satisfactory results to the Province. He has certainly been very expeditious in his journey, considering the many places he had to visit, and the lime required to ascertain the requirements of the various districts, The whole trip has been pi rformed in forty days, Sundays included, and he used only one horse throughout the journey. Mr Gillies set put front Tokomairiro on the 10th June, and first visited Adam’s and Miller’s Flats, on his way to Waitahuna and Tuapeka. After a short stay in Lawrence, he went on to Switzer’s via Teviot. While there, he visited to Waikaka Goldfields, which Mr Gillies feels confident will ultimately prove very auriferous. At present there arc two water-races being constructed, which, when finished, will cost from 1.8,000 to LO.OOU. This is a good guarantee of the confidence entertained in the payable nature of the ground. One ot this races is, we understand, being entirely paid out of the men’s pockets who arc engaged in bringing it in, viz., ILrbery and party. They had, while Mr Gillies Tfas there. 10 wages men ac work, and were very sanguine of their prospects. They expected to have part of the water on in about a mouth. From Waikaka, Mr Gillies proceeded to Kingston, and from thence to Queenstown, over the Devil’s Staircase. While there he visited Frankton and the Arrow. His next resting place was Cardrona, from which place he proceeded to Wanaka Lake. After taking a passing look at the Hawea, lie went on to Cromwell, and while there inspected the new quartz reef at Bendigo Gully, and had the pleasure of seeing a cake of 1570zs refolded, the result of lour day's crushing. Clyde was his next destination, and from thence lie proceeded to Alexandra. Mr Gillies made a short, stay at Black’s No. 1, and crossed the range from there to have a look at the Ida Valley, above Black’s No. 2, and opposite German Hill. He next visited Dry bread, Welshman’s, and . St. Bathan’s. After this he proceeded to Hill’s Creek, Rough Ridge quartz reefs. Mr Gillies made a short stay at Naseby, visited Hamilton, Hyde, and Macrae’s. From thence he came on to Palmerston, and arrived in Dunedin on Tuesday, the 20th iust.

During his tour Mr Gillies visited the following stations :—Messrs Smith, Tuapeka; M'Lean, Beaumont; Dalgety, between Beaumont and Spylaw •

Cargill and Anderson, Toviot; Swauston, Calcatt, and Mcnlovo, MTvellar and Jackson, Switzers ; Trotter, Kingston ; Boyes Brothers, Queenstown ; Holmes and Campbell, Wanaka ; M'Lean, Hawea and Lindis ; Loughman Brothers, Cromwell ; Crey and Turnbull, Clyde and Alexandra ; Low and Campbell, Black’s No. 1 ; Glassford, Black’s No. 1 ; Holland, Blackstone Hill ; Handyside and Koberts, Welshman's ; Sandei’s Bros., Naseby ; I). Maitland, Naseby ; Main, Hyde. We believe that Mr Gillies has selected land on all these stations eligible tor sale, leasing, &c. With some of the owners of these runs he has come to terms, while with others he will be able to negotiate on favorable terms.
