THE MAYORALTY.

{To the. Editor of the Evening Star.) Sir—Observing in the D.a'dy, Times report of my speech yesterday on the Mayoral hustings an error, which I attribute to my having been at the moment indistinctly heard, I would take it as au especial mark of kindness if you would make the correction in this evening’s Star. I am made to say that I had suggested to the Town Board of 1863 the propriety, as a matter of economy, of haring a large portion of the "public lights extinguished at ten (10) o’clock ” instead of sunrise ; whereas what I really did say and recommended was two (2) o’clock in the morning.—Yours, &c. Millar, F.S.A. To the Editor of the Eccutiiy Sin,., Sir,—Although it may be somewhat irregular may I crave your correspondence columns for a word or two tojthc electors. On reading the newspaper reports and listening to the conversation of the day, I have become impressed with the fact that the contest for the mayoralty is, in the popular mind, ouly au unseemly scramble for the salary attached to it. As I wish that there may be no misunderstanding in the matter so far as I am concerned, 1 desire most distinctly to say here that I will iuqst einpatp cally refuse to receive any remuneration of any pecuniary kind whatever for the discharge of the duties of au office which has in my opinion, and ought to have in the opinion of every man, honor sufficient in itself to constitute au incentive to even the highest in our social scale to aspire to it.—Yours, &c. K. S. Dods.
