Mr H. Wise has published, in a neat pamphlet form, a “ West Coast Directory, comprising the townships of Hokitika and Greymouth and seeing that so many traders from Dunedin have settled on the ‘West Coast, it will be not only of local use, but to ourselves a great assistance in finding many “missing friends.” Prefixed to the Directory are several valuable items of information, such as the Port of Hokitika signals, and a terse description of the various gold fields radiating from that district. The Directors of the Caledonian Society will hold a meeting on Friday evening to consider the accounts in . connection with the late Gathering.
This afternoon the police arrested a man named James Cooke for attempting to 'set on fire an unoccupied dwelling situate in Stuart street, opposite the premises lately occupied by ! Mr Geddes, the undertaker. The fire, which 1 was discovered in the back room, consisted of a ; bundle of ignited rags and paper, and was speedily extinguished. A few minutes before the alarm was raised, Cooke was seen by two men near to leave the house hurriedly.
In the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before A. C. Strode, JEsq., R.M., John Thompson, charged with furiously driving through the Octagon, was fined 20s and costs. George Lloyd, charged with allowing a horse to depasture within the limits of the town, was fined 2s 6d and cos is. John Campbell was charged, upon the information of Neil Ross, with having assaulted him on the 9th instant. From the evidence given it appeared that a most unprovoked assault had been committed, for which the defendant was fined L 3 and costs. John Collins, charged with receiving property stolen by one Barbara Weldon from Frederick Parker on the 18th December, and who was remanded to obtain witnesses to support an alibi set up by him, was again brought up. The witnesses, when called upon, proved having, on divers occasions, seen the prisoner at work the week previous to the 18th ult., but none of them could remember seeing him on the morning of the day when the offence was committed. The prisoner was further remanded until Tuesday next. Barbara Weldon was charged with stealing the said property, but being unable to attend the Court through illness, was also remanded until Tuesday. Hugh Ross was informed against by Edward M‘Ewan with illegally detaining a horse ; but upon promising to restore it, the Magistrate made an order to that effect, the defendant in default to pay £2O and costs. We have received the first number of the Invercargill Weekly Times , published by the proprietor of the Southland Times. It is carefully printed, and besides containing a more than average quantity of reading matter, is well supplied with advertisements. We should think that it will be a great boon to those residing in the back country of Southland. In another column will be found the result of the Rifle Association match for the Cup presented by the Evening Star. It is a noticeable circumstance that amongst the six highest scores, not a single “miss” occurred. The notorious drunkard, Barbara Weldon, who has been lately lodged in Gaol on a charge of stealing from the person, attempted to commit suicide this morning. By some means she obtained an old knife, used in the laundry for cutting soap, and proceeded with it to the water closet. One of the prisoners passing by found her there, with a small gash in her throat cut with it. Dr Yates, who was sent for, attended immediately, and pronounced the wound not to be serious. We hear that an original share in the Canada Quartz Reef Mining Company was sold to-day for £lls.
